Worried about upgrading your games rig to vista due to the elusive performance drops? Well it seems that's not going to be for much longer!

Extremetech had a run over some current games on Vista RTM, Vista with some hotfixes applies and then vista with the 700MB SP1 applied. Unfortunately at the time of the first article Crysis had a bug which created a large performance loss on SP1, but that has recently been fixed by the latest forceware and patches and they ran the tests again.

Extremetech Wrote:
The Web has been abuzz with chatter about Windows Vista's upcoming Service Pack 1 (SP1): What it will and will not fix, how it will affect performance, how long will it take to install, and so on. PC manufacturers, some journalists, and a great deal of torrent addicts already have the service pack, and we're among that crew.

While there are lots of things to write about SP1, the first thing we're going to focus on is performance. Sure, security is important as is compatibility, but we're hoping SP1 turns Vista into the screaming speed demon Microsoft once seemed to suggest it would be. Of course, when we say performance, we're mainly talking about games, but we checked out other areas in which it supposedly improves the Vista experience as well.

*attention has totally been taken up by the kick ass stock that would make one hell of a sig*
D4rk, I take it your running SP1 now? When do we expect Microsoft to release it and have it sitting in our Windows Update box?
i'm running vistas on my macbook pro w/parallels think i should get this SP, my vista is SLOWWWWW

was thinking i should go back to XP
How much ram does your mac book pro have in it drew? Is it a newer Mac Book?
I didn't know SP1 for Vista was out. That's the main reason I've been waiting so long to switch to Vista. I'm waiting for SP1 to fix all the bugs and whatnot that it has now.
It's allegedly available for the public by the end of march.

The more savvy web users will be able to find a copy of the version distributed to manufacturers on many of the big torrent trackers

I wonder if there's a problem some place else then, because you should be able to run it really great with 2gb of ram.

hmm, I'll wait til' the end of March and then torrent locate me a copy if it doesn't come out then.

I did a google search and found it on a torrent. I'd rather someone just upload it to Wiiloaded and let us download it.

Ha. I'd rather the lawyers not knock on my door... not to mention, everyone tells a friend til it gets posted on some high traffic forum, killing our server and using up our traffic (giving me a huge bandwidth bill), which I'm assuming wouldn't be made up in adverts since it would be a direct download link!

Service packs are free updates. Before they're released, though, the technet and MSDN releases to developers are kept under a little lock and key.

When Microsoft puts it on Windows Update, you'll get it.
