Recently, IGN had a conversation with famed game designer Will Wright, president of Maxis and creator of such games like The Sims, Sim City, and many other titles. Soon, a game called Spore will be added to his roaster of games.
What is Spore? Spore is probably the most open ended and ambitious game ever conceived in the gaming industry. Starting out in a pool of primordial goo you embark on the journey of a life-time. Many life-times actually as the game progresses you and your custom built species evolves throughout millions of game years. So as you swim in your primal gunk you begin to eat its inhabitants growing bigger and bigger with a Pac-Man like control scheme. As you grow you eventually gain the chance to evolve your creature. Add a spike, tail, proboscis whatever you would like. Each part you add allows your creature new abilities and such. However, the real kicker in this game is that however odd or abstract your creature is, the game will analyse its bone structure and procedurally animates them.
Eventually you find yourself a multi celled organism in a now three-dimensional ocean filled with strange creatures like you. Every creature in the game is made by another player like you and is being sent to your computer as you play. Every time you put the disk in the disk drive you discover something new. So as you evolve your physical appearance you will notice that you can evolve your creatures brain which brings you to the more amazing parts of Spore. As your brain evolves your creatures form a tribe, fighting, trading, and conversing with other tribes with your same species around your planet. Soon they start working as a team, building new buildings, (buildings are also completely customizable from the ground up) and forming a whole civilization.
Soon your species will begin travelling through space in your customized U.F.O and vehicles. When your are in space you are in the ultimate sand box. Completely terraform a planet to a state where animals can live there. Make contact with other species made by other people and many other options. This is truly the most open ended game ever.
The conversation began with the question "Will Spore eventually be brought to consoles or handhelds?" Will Wright responded saying that he and the Spore team were now thinking of Spore as a franchise which they would like to bring to consoles and handhelds alike. Will stated that it was too early to confirm if Spore would appear on current consoles or the next-gen consoles but if anything, the game will most likely appear on the next-gen consoles. Will Wright has stated that the dev team have been messing around with the Nintendo Wii dev kit and are intrigued by the controls and the possibilities the controller opens. So apparently Will and the Spore team are excited about the possibilities of the consoles namely the Wii. It's only a matter of time whether Spore will trek off of the monitor and onto our televisions.
