In a press release today Nintendo announced that Super Smash Bros. Brawl has become Nintendo of America's fastest selling game to date. Since the game's release on March 9th, Nintendo's brawler has sold roughly 1.4 million units including 874,000 on day one.
Having already sold roughly 1.5 million copies in Japan in just over a month and a half, and with PAL territories still awaiting their release of Nintendo's largest series, Brawl could be well on its way to becoming Wii's best selling game without some piece of hardware or peripheral included. Considering Melee, the previous game in the Smash Bros. series sold over 7 million units to become the top selling game of Nintendo's GameCube it should be no surprise to see Brawl's high sales numbers.

You know, I think some of you guys are so blinded by love for Brawl you lose all sense of objectiveness about it. Great though it may be, you honestly believe it's going to topple the likes of Super Mario Bros., Pokémon, and Tetris, which are so popular even someone with only a fleeting knowledge of video games could probably recognise them?

It won't be Halo..no matter how hard they try. Especially with it not being released in Europe yet.
Cloud has a good point. Even though this might be an accomplishment for Nintendo, it's not that big when you look at other games or franchises.
This is not Brawl's fault. Its is the fault of Nintendo's crappy localisation teams. Lazy bastards.
Anyway, nice sales there. Won't topple the long-standing giants though. Brawl will happily live in their shadow however... I wonder if it will outsell its superior (Melee) I think it is safe to say it will, since there are more people who actually OWN this console as opposed to the poor GCN.
Yeah, it's gonna sell more than Melee for that very reason. If they had voice chatting and stable online play then this game would sell even more. So far the games feels pretty fun (new game feel and all that) but the online is just ridiculous and I've yet to be able to even play a game that's not so laggy that it just looks like someone pressed start.
Not a massive suprise, but good for Brawl! It has been obvious it would sell well for like the past two years now, so at least it has lived up to expectations.

Woah buddy. I said that because tons of people like Brawl...and I didn't know what the top record was. Now I do, so calm down. Oh and your wrong about Tetris...sad as it may be I know quite a few people who have no idea what Tetris is...Plus, Mario and Pokemon are in Brawl...so people would recognize those characters hence selling the game even more.

Anyway, I got Brawl and No More Heroes yesterday (thank you Freeloader). Brawl is a fantastic game, but unlike a few people I can already tell it isn't going to my favourite game of all time.
