This is becoming a trend, isn't it? Once again, PSP manages to climb its way to the top of the Japanese hardware sales charts, besting even Nintendo's almighty DS and Wii consoles. With 57,651 units sold last week, Sony's handheld is already inching towards selling one million units in Japan this year. The sales spike is surprising, considering the most major release this week was echochrome.

PSP - 57,651
WII - 55,845
NDS - 53,266
PS3 - 14,934
PS2 - 9,930
360 - 1,744

Undoubtedly Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G will create some more interesting sales charts. We're glad to see PSP is doing so well in Japan -- will that success ever translate in the states?

I think the PSP has really been the comeback kid these last couple of years. I always find it funny when I hear people talking on other forums how the PSP is dead as if they're somehow sticking it to Sony by saying that, but the numbers don't lie, and the PSP is still alive and doing quite well. Hopefully this year will see more great games so the PSP can do even better.
the PSP is dead when you compare it to the DS. I think that's what most people are talking about.

Is Crisis Core out in Japan? That might explain the sales spike.
I think maybe its getting to the point where everyone who wants a DS in Japan... already has one. And is now just picking up a PSP. Lol.

Either way, positive to see for Sony. Its a tough world out there and you take what wins you can get.

EDIT: Crisis Core has been out in Japan for a month or more, right? So that doesn't really explain it...
I think you hit the nail on the head lmx. everyone in Japan already has a DS so they're just picking up a PSP to have another game system to play on.

I always laugh when reading things like this, because it's the first thing anyone ever says when you say something good about PSP sales.

It's easy to be on the top like the DS is, but I think it's taken some really great games to bring the PSP off of the life support , because we have to remember, it's trying to reach a different audience than the DS is.

What do you mean bring the PSP off life support? These good games that come out occasionally keep it on there. If we were to by chance get a stellar month of games then maybe it'd come off life support.
Maybe you should do a little more research.  The PSP has been doing amazing for quite a while now.
I had two and sold them both but I also sold my DS Lite as well. I'm just not a portable game player I guess. Thinking about it now if I had to or felt like buying another portable system I'd probably get the PSP again. I enjoyed many of the games on the DS but I also enjoyed some games on the PSP. I also didn't feel so weird pulling out my PSP in public as much as I did my DS Lite. It's good to have other functions as well such as being able to watch videos on it and listen to music and whatnot. I sold my PSP a while back before anything decent wasn't out such as Final Fantasy or the new God of War. I don't think I'll be buying another one anyways but just thought I'd give my two cents on the topic at hand. PSP really is the better handheld in my opinion.
I think anyone who would argue that the PSP doesn't have that many good games should just check out http://www.metacritic.com and look at the game raitings between the PSP and DS. PSP has 166 games that scored 70 or above and the DS has 148 that score 70 or above.
That doesn't matter. The PSP is basically a portable PS2. The DS isn't a portable Wii. It's got its own little selling point. The PSP only had the ability to play those UMD movies which backfired tremendously.
Heh, good for the PSP. It needs the support from Japan. There must be something coming out that's sparked Japanese gamers want for PSPs? Because usually systems don't sell like that for no reason. XD

You can't simply tie the PSP to UMD because it can do much more. Music, Movies, and games can be played from the Memory Stick.

True but movies and music arent the selling point for the PSP. Why would you want to watch a feature length movie on such a small screen? The entire movie length would drain the battery anyways. And most people have an MP3 or Ipod for music. You wouldnt buy the PSP just for the Music capabilities. They need to concentrate on the Games for the PSP and back away from the UMD format.

The PSP has a larger, and brighter screen than the iPhone, and I believe comparable battery life while playing movies.
