Right after the announcement of a blocked Wii FreeLoader comes another kick in the teeth. The years biggest Wii release, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which has seen massive delays in both Europe and Australia, will refuse to allow itself to be read on a modded Wii console. With thousands of Wii owners worldwide intentionally modding their consoles in order to play 'Brawl on its American release date, they have now been hit with a horrible surprise. It turns out Nintendo aren't quite as in-the-dark as we thought.
This ties in, funnily enough, with the recent flurry of "disc read errors" on copies of the game, with many of these errors actually turning out to be disc lockups on consoles retrofitted with modchips! This is sure to worry modded Wii owners, could this be the same for all future first-party releases? If you are a Wii consumer with a modchip and have attempted to load up Super Smash Bros. Brawl only to see a disc error message, then you may just have been hit by this piracy-crackdown.
Paradoxically, it appears that while the retail version of the game receives an error message, a pirated version burned to a blank DL-DVD will run perfectly, without a hitch. We here at WiiLoaded.com strongly recommend to Wii owners not to take this path however, as this is illegal and will most likely be cracked down on in a future update, as we've already seen happen. If you are a modded Wii owner and you have had an experience like this, then please let us know in the forum!
