Yes I thought of this all by myself

For Nintendo's next handheld, asuming it still "folds" and closes like they do now, could have an analog stick, which would allow better control than a d-pad.
Imagine a DS and where the d-pad is and imagine a Gamecube style analog stick there. You're probably wondering how it'll close. On the left side of the console there will be a switch. When this switch is pushed forward it will lock the control stick up for use. When the player is done, they simply release the switch and push the control stick down into the console where it clicks and locks into place. To pop it back up again simply push the switch forward again.
So what do you think? I don't know if something like this could work but then again, you never know. It'd be cool to have and would be 10x better than the joystick the PSP currently has.
You have too much free time

That is possibly the greatest original idea i have ever heard from a forum - ever!!
To be honest i dont think Nintendo will be changing the controller.Look and Sony and Microsoft. They didnt change their controller by much.I doubt nintendo will try to change the Wii controller.
um, to the guy above. the thread starter is talking about the next DS...didn't you read anything?
To the thread starter - I like it, but it's not original. I have heard people talking about analog control on the DS since it first came out. I see inherant flaws in the design though, locking and popping in and out of place will slowly "kill" the controller. Think of it like car shocks. They need repairing throughout the years, just like the pop up analog would. I think a trackball like approach may be better suited. And when closed the area the ball fits into, aka the speaker space is just inverted. Might make the system a hair wider, but it could work nice. I don't necessarily like track balls, but it would probably be a nicer fit!
sooner or later i think they will do this its just a rout thet i think nintendo will go down and who can blame them its a pretty good idea

Truthfully I have no idea how it came to me. I was just sitting there and BAM! There it was. And of course I knew this wouldn't work. That's why I'm not working for Nintendo's DS team.
to tell you the truth i dont think its that good of an idea
why dont you think its a good idea?
analog sticks on a folding portable is a great idea - and this is a great idea of how to execute it.
agreed, but it should like push it and it pops up, and push down to close the ds.
I hope Nintendo doesn't make their next handheld foldable. With a new DS, obviously, this would be impossible, but if they make a new GameBoy, I hope it doesn't have a top covering. I really like the GBA and the PSP, with their no-fold design.
I like foldy bendy stuffs. Also my GBA screen gets scratched up by my carelessness. Folds FTW.
if the system sytill folds their is no way that they can do this considering that when it folds it will stick out because of the analog stick

I like the folding too. Like Ionic mentioned it sort of acts like a scratch guard. And I don't see why it really matters that much weather it folds or not.
you're nuts you know the ds is fine as long as another super mario 64 ds and rayman ds doesn't come out
What's wrong with Mario 64 DS? That's the only game I saw fit to buy back when I had my DS.
Here is an idea.
Folded design still, so we are still talking about a DS configuration. DS2.
The top screen fold has inverted speakers to make room for the analog controler on the left, its inverted on both sides just because of astetics. The analog controler would work just fine, the sides may to be slightly wider to compensate, but not much room is needed for a decent analog control.
What do you think?
The PSP's analog stick I think is better than the d-pad or the other analog sticks on the Dual Force controllers. I like the whole gliding feeling of it.
Sorry I dont mean to burst your bubble but, its not that" original

I personally like the idea. I just find it hard to make it in a way that would require less maintenence. Typical wear would cause alot of problems in the long run. Then again, it still would be better than the PSP analog stick, which I'm not a fan of.
