Nearly a year-and-a-half after the Wii's launch in November 2006, Nintendo are finally launching the incredibly popular console in South Korea.

To create some excitement around the unveiling, Nintendo are hosting a press conference in Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul on April 14th. With May 5th being the official Korean "Children's Day", it has been heavily assumed that this will be the chosen date of the system's grand launch. There has been no official response from the company regarding the launch date, however, so we'll just have to wait for the translations of the happenings in Seoul on April 14th.

With online PC gaming being the main gaming staple in Korea, the only console to have successfully broken this trend is the Nintendo DS, so Nintendo are hoping to pull off much of the same with Wii.

Cool! I bet it'll do really well, I work at a summer camp and we had a bunch of kids come over from South Korea on a special program and they LOVE Nintendo and Mario. I bet it'll sell very well.
Yea, if they keep a good supply in Korea when it comes out, i'm sure there will be an increase in Wii sales.
This is just begging for a Wii port of StarCraft...

^^--- That was the most stereotypical comment I have ever made.
I wish Nintendo would get supply out to the countries who already have the Wii, and then once that happens feel free to spread the love to other countries. I'm not sure how releasing the system in South Korea will increase Wii consoles in the US and other places as was suggested in a previous post.
where the hell are they getting consoles for a korean launch, if they have half a million warehoused somewhere, send them to the US, we will gobble them up

Excellent point drew, and I think that's something all the "The systems are just selling out and Nintendo can't make enough" people should think about.

maybe i dont understand marketing well enough, WHY on earth would nintendo purposely limit supply with demand high and a set price, all they are doing is driving up the secondary (ebay) market for wiis, and leaving $$$ off the table or in competitors pockets

maybe perceived scarcity keeps buzz and demand higher than it would be otherwise, its a bit confusing
I was thinking the same thing when I read this. If they have so many Wiis just lying around to support an official launch in another country then why is the U.S. still having shortages?
Demand can be driven by someone not being able to purchase something. Then when a product is available to whomever is willing to drive to their local Walmart to pick it up...the gotta have it cause I can't get it thing is gone.
Exactly, and not many casuals will think of trying somewhere like eBay.

have to disagree, thats exactly who is buying them on ebay, casual gamers arent waiting in lines or camping out

More people are online in South Korea than in any other country in the world. And with wii's online being a little lacking at the time, I'm not sure that the wii or its games will sell over games like MMO's and the systems they run on. I'm sure it'll sell pretty well, but I doubt people will think it's the best thing since sliced bread like in Japan.
