A glitch, an oversight, or maybe just a great new technique for Link and Toon Link. I, as Link, was in the middle of a match against Zelda in Brawl's Classic mode when the CPU used an Assist Trophy that turned out to be a Metroid. Just by chance I happened to be in the air and using Link's Up B attack when the Metroid latched on. As what I can only describe as a reflex I kept tapping B while still holding up on the control stick. What wound up happening was Link would keep rising higher and higher until eventually shaking the Metroid off.
The explanation of exactly why it happened is pretty easy to understand. Normally at the end of Link's spin attack (and every other character's recovery moves) he's unable to do any more moves until he hits the ground or gets hit. So as Link is part way through his spin he gets damaged by the Metroid meaning I can then perform his spin again and again repeatedly until the Metroid is finally hit enough to fall off. However Link needs to be in the air for this to work so nothing extraordinary will happen if you're on the ground.
It was hard to imagine that this would be so difficult to duplicate. Not because it is at all complicated, but only because it seems that the Metroid is among the rarer ATs. Finally I was able to pull out a Metroid and it worked like a charm just like before. Due to frustratingly low chance of a Metroid appearing it became hard to test this out with other characters. The only other character capable of doing something similar is Toon Link and it doesn't work with Mario, Luigi, or Samus.
So while not particularly useful it's still pretty neat. Anyone have any particular thoughts about all this, and if you're able to duplicate or have already seen such a thing with other characters let us know. A video taken from the replay is below.
The replays aren't videos and run off of the game's engine so we needed a TV capture card to get a video onto the internet/computers. Thanks to z6 for that.
Yeah, that's pretty cool. I'll have to keep my eyes open but I could have sworn I had some kind of glitch last week but it escapes me now what happened. Nice find!
