An unexpected treat for PS3 owners appeared on the PSN tonight. Firmware 2.42 is now available for download. We're currently in the process of downloading and installing the update, but rest assured that we'll have full details soon. (We're guessing it'll be Life With PlayStation, promised to arrive by the end of the month.)
Update: Looks like our guess was wrong. There doesn't appear to be anything new on the XMB. Perhaps this is just another "stability" or "security" update. We'll update again if we find out more.
Update #2: The official word: "This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software." A bit underwhelming? Perhaps.

I'm downloading it now, though it doesn't look like we get anything with it...
0-0...um, what? OK, small, real small update, is it that necessary?
I was wondering why I couldn't log into the PSN
I don't mind--improved playback means that they are actively trying to enhance the BC of the system, which makes me a happy panda
*EDIT* Either my internet, my PS3, or both are having some serious issues, because after restarting the download twice, it is still not updating past a glorious 0%... I'll go have a cigarette, then see. I'm doubtful...
Any suggestions? My internet seems to be fine (as is indicated by my posting

)
*EDIT II* Great, just great. 30 minutes in and 9% later, I got an error and was disconnected. Looks like I'll be downloading this to my comp...or updating tomorrow.
I know some people on here have troubles downloading updates from the PSN, but I'm not one of them. I've never had an issue with the system giving me an error, so I don't know what to say about that. I'm hoping with get the life with Playstation update soon.
Everyone was downloading at once and the servers were getting hammered as usual. It took me about 45 mins to download the file, which was approximately 130mb. A lot of people say it is in preparation for the end of the month but it only says that it's for stability issues. If it helps with anything then who can complain?
I don't get why people complain about how long it takes. You click the little box that says the PS3 will restart and shut itself down before going to bed, and when you wake up you should have a PS3 with a new firmware and no issues. It's kind of like watching water boil...damn, it seems to take forever, and when millions of people are downloading the same 130mp file, it's gonna take longer.
Yea, I started the download right before I went to bed and checked the little box so I woke up and I had the latest version.
mine d/l'ed in under 30 min.
i still dont like having frequent updates. the update is supposed to fix the playback quality of some PS games? way too vague and seems unnecessary.
Yeah, well my problem was that it kept disconnecting, so the little box made no difference.
I downloaded it to my computer, though, and THAT took about 3 hours (yes, 3 HOURS). I'm gonna pop it on an SD card and update it right now.

I like having the firmware updates...IMO it just shows that Sony is keeping on top of things. I'm also guessing these firmware updates are in prep for something larger, and they'd rather you spend 30 min a couple of times then have you wait 1 hour and 30 minutes for a full update.
My experience with PSN and updates:
So far firmware updates haven't been much of an issue for me. Software specific updates on the other hand take multiple tries, and usually result in me having to complete them through in game menus. I'm also constantly getting kicked off the PSN and being forced to sign back in every 5, 10, or 30 minutes. Luckily online play has only had minimal issues.
My new TV had just arrived and I connected the PS3 to test it out and then Bam...update time. It's ok though because I just switched over and tried the Wii out while waiting for the PS3 to finish updating. Luckily, I don't have any trouble with being disconnected from PSN all the time. One thing that I didn't know but found out recently is that when you watch a movie (blu ray for example) that it will sign you out of the PSN while you watch and sign you back in when you quit the movie.
I tried playing some CoD4 with a friend in a party and it took about 7-8 tries to get into a match. Everytime we'd join a lobby it'd close. When I finally got into a game, I got my second
and third 10+ kill game.
Maybe I should call Sony on why I'm constantly getting the boot on PSN. I'll be browsing the store, in the middle of a non-online game, or just navigating the XMB and they'll sign me out. Auto sign in doesn't seem to work either. Just says "signing in" for long periods of time. If I cancel it and do the manual sign in I get in after a couple seconds. From my experience with Sony, they'll just blame it on my network (despite few issues playing online games and no issues with the computer).
I can say that I haven't had the issues your having Harmonica, though a couple days ago Cosmic messaged me on the PS3 asking why my ID kept going on and offline every couple of seconds. I had been playing a game PJM offline and never received a disconnect notice.
The only problem I have had is since the PSN got movie downloads and sometimes it takes me longer to get into the PSN store.
Come to think of it I have also seen you going on and off several times in a row on my PSN as well gft. I just thought you were switching to different accounts to download stuff from other PSN accounts or something.
nope that wasn't the case, and I do sometimes log off of the PSN, but never anything like you guys have described. I have seen you Mana go on and off quite a bit, but never thought anything of it more than a poor internet connection.

I see it with quite a few different people, but some generally have rock solid connections. I only get mad when I'm in the middle of typing a message and they sign me out. Forces me to start all over.

I hate that. Why can't they let you download stuff while watching movies?
Hmmm, I don't have any problems with my PSN as well. It doesn't sign me off and then back on but it would appear that way recently because of all the movies I've been testing out and watching. Other than that I'm not sure why it's showing people going off and on if they really aren't doing so.

My guess is that if your playing a Blu-ray movie that connects to the internet, Sony is afraid that your experience will be hindered if your also downloaded other software for the PS3.
It's kind of like people complaining that XMB doesn't work during movies. If I'm watching a movie, the last thing I want to see in the top right of my screen is ManaBurnX is now online or you've received a new message from....
