Any recommendations for free downloadable firewalls for me to utilize?

I had Norton running then subscription ran at so now for anti virus I give it a scan every now and again, I recently downloaded spybot (Thanks D4rk) as a form of protection from malicious things out there and I would like a fire wall...so yeah.
Well I already told you about ZoneAlarm, so yeah...
Spybot is more anti-malware, so I'd advise you grab a copy of AVG too so you've got decent antivirus.

And as for firewalls, ZoneAlarm or Outpost (I'd go with the latter) are the best options.

Finally, I'd recommend you 'acquire' Eset Smart Security (Contains Nod32 Anti-virus) as it is by far the best 'out-of-the-box' solution I've ever used. It uses next to no memory and it's widely regarded as the best consumer anti-virus solution. plus it comes with a firewall so you get the same kind of protection there too.

If you didn't mind not having a central console. Nod32 and Outpost Firewall is the best combination available.

Now y'see I don't trust myself acquiring it, I'll end up getting virus >_<

But I may purchase it at some time.

Am I pretty safe for now with spybot, Norton and zonealarm?

I have always used Norton, so I will highly recommend it. Right now, you can buy Norton Internet Security for around £30.00 on Play.com.
I just ordered mine recently, so I just wanted to let you know. Smile

I currently already have the 2007 version of norton installed, however due to my subscription ending I am missing some features such as virus database updates. For a smaller fee I could just re0subscribe rather than re-buy the program.

Thanks for your suggestion though, appreciated.

Norton is bad.

It works (just about) but there are much better, much cheaper offerings available.

A virus scan in Norton took 2 days on my PC, in Nod32 it was done in 5 hours.

+ Norton has failed to detect viruses in the wild before. Nod32 has not.

On Access is background scanning.
On Demand is when there is a scan actually running (either scheduled or manually started)

(Eset is the company that owns Nod32)

Also Norton is bloated and a notorious memory hog. Nod32 is currently only using 18MB of my memory and my computer's been on for about 3 days.

AVG looks pretty bad...754 missed viruses CANNOT be good news.

I will look into purchasing NOD in the foreseeable future hopefully. But for just basic internet surfing and such am I safe with norton, spybot and zonealarm for now? I do not download many files and when I do it is a trusted source and I do not do anything internet money management.

yeah Smile

Prexv 2.0 is free as long as it doesn't find a problem (30 day trial after that, i think).

By far the best I've used.
I've been using Nod32 for a long time now. I used to use Kaspersky but after changing to Nod32 I loved it so much that I didn't go back. Nod32 is the best, imo.
I use avast, it's totally free and you only have to "subscribe" every 14 months, it's free as long as it doesn't go corporate

Thats what I use. There's also Avira Antivir PE, but I think that lags behind in features, Avast is the most feature rich free program out there.
