We already knew that Id Software co-founder John Carmack was on board with the iPhone to some extent, but at the now-happening QuakeCon 2008 in Dallas he's revealed just how impressed with the device he really is. According to Apple Insider, while Carmack admits that graphics memory could be a limiting factor, he describes the phone's hardware as equivalent to a Dreamcast and almost on par with a PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox. He also sees it as far superior, at least in terms of raw specs, than the two big dedicated handheld consoles out there, saying that is "more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined." Unfortuantely, he didn't have any actual games to show off, but he did at least confirm that Id has two "tentative titles" in the works, including a "conventional mobile game," and one that pushes the iPhone's graphics capabilities.

I don't own an iPhone, but I think this guy might be exaggerating it's abilities, at least compared to the dedicated gaming hand helds...what do you think?
I haven't seen anything on the iPhone games that comes remotely close to this guy's claim.
I'd like someone to find details specs on the graphics chip and ram for this phone. I can't find it, but I agree with you Rooster...I think this guy is full of hot air.
From what I understand, the GPU is almost identical to that of the Dreamcast.

The CPU is about the same as the Xbox, give or take a little power.

I'd say it's a little better than the PSP, and substantially better than the DS.
ok so lets see
ds dual cpu's one at 66 and one at 33mhz.
screen res 256x192 4meg ram, dual screens, touch screen. 600k video ram

iphone single screen res of 320x480 which is touch screen, Samsung S5L8900 + PowerVR MBX 3D graphics co-processor running at between 233-333mhz.
oh and it costs over double that of a DS,

so it's more powerfull than a DS but so's a frakin laptop, it's a phone, it's a smart phone, forget games on it, put office apps on it, if you wanna game buy a DS

anyway it is an impresive phone, but it's a phone, i'm not gonna kill my talk time by playing games.
I remember the N-Gage. Don't go down that road, iPhone.
Don't speak that name again lm-x. The Dark Eye will come after you if you do...
I had the nGage Quad and I am still trying to forget it. I also have the iPhone and I do play games on it when I'm outside and traveling. I mostly play the new Texas Hold Em and I have to admit that the graphics on that is pretty damn good. Toungue
