Meh. Regardless of what Yahtzee said we know the game is good.
His main disagreements with the game were:
A) Spot on [referring to Subspace]
and
B) Strange [towards unlocking things in a franchise which is KNOWN for amounts of unlockables]
Anyway, it was funny to watch at the very least.
I think when a game like Brawl comes out, Nintendo should keep tight-lipped about the unlockables, and just tell games that there are many. I understand when reviews start checking out the game some things will be spoiled, but still, a little surprise never hurt anyone.
I can see where a gamer might be frustrated by seeing tons and tons of clips with his favorite fighter, only to find out he has to play a certain number of hours to unlock it or play a certain number of matches.
Its just something petty to whine about if its part of the franchise. Sure, I may not like it that much. But its there, and that's all there is to it.
It was there in Melee, its there in Brawl, and it'll be there in Smash 4.
I'm not sure how opinions are petty just because people disagree with them. Playing a game for a certain amount of hours really isn't reason to unlock something or someone, it just seems par for the course.
Sigh.
This is going nowhere. As much as I hate to say this, Sakurai developed Brawl with a single player experience in mind. And what better way to further encourage single player experience by adding unlockable rewards.
Yahtzee seemed like he was mostly pissy because he was nagged to review it, which is understandable. I assumed he wouldn't like it anyway.
Ben Yahtzee Croshaw is still the man though.
I value your opinion so you don't have to worry about me making the comment "Sigh. This is going nowhere", just because we don't agree.
It sounds like SSBB is just in a genre that Yahtzee doesn't like to begin with, and maybe that's why he didn't care to review it. As you've pointed out previously, that by no means reflects bad on SSBB, because I think we can both agree that it's a good game.
It certainly is a good game. Its the one game that has made my Wii worthwhile since Metroid graced it 6 months ago.
I had all the stuff unlocked in a day and a half, so it really doesn't take that much effort.
All it takes is getting a bunch of friends around, drinks, and playing Smash til you have everything. Wouldn't take more than a couple of nights of that.
It seems to me that he had some really problems with this game. Playing together with one of my friends I unlocked every character in SubSpace by playing from 12:30-6:45. It wasn't that difficult.
I agree with what LMX said: he's tired of being nagged into doing reviews. But that's still no reason to trash this game like that. He wasn't even really talking about the game. He was talking about whiny fanboys.
Don't you have unlockables in every fighting game? <_<
Which was his gripe. He wasn't really singling out Smash but instead criticizing the entire aspect of having unlockable characters in fighting games. The thing I will say though is that ironically enough Smash isn't a game you can just button mash with while at the same time its not a real technical fighter where you need to spend hours upon hours studying a character and learning all their is to know so for that I don't mind unlockable characters as much in Brawl, but in the more advanced fighters like Soul Calibur it's a problem.
Not to mention that Yahtzee's said repeatedly that he's not big on multiplayer so if he's putting a larger emphasis on single player in Brawl there's no doubt he's gonna hate it, just like Halo 3. That game may have the worst single player campaign of any FPS I've ever played but the multiplayer is addicting and it's what sells the game. Same goes for Brawl, except that the single player is passable at the very least.
But then again there's really nothing to discuss with a Yahtzee review. Unless the game is Portal or Call of Duty 4 (both incredible games) then whatever game he happens to be reviewing gets torn a new one. It's just expected now really.
You do need to study the characters to a decent extent. And its certainly no button masher, but this is the conclusion that a lot of people leap to about Smash. So whatever, at any rate. The review made me laugh.
To me, it looks like a review bashing the fan base, and the game to a lesser extent.
And how the hell can you have "button mashing" (to win) and "That guy" in one game?
Smash Brothers is too simple to be a button masher, strange as it sounds. But really, the primary goal of this was to cause a lot of BAWWWW-ing from Nintendo fans, and judging by the comment ratio of Brawl (500+) to his other games (100 or so) Mission accomplished!
I can hardly wait for his review of GTA4 or MGS4...
Oh man I loved this review! I can't stop laughing!
Man this review was funny
