Plot
You choose to be a young boy or girl up pokemon trainer starting your journey in Twinleaf Town. You must collect and see as much Pokémon as possible with your Pokédex in order to help professor Rowan with his reaserach. In order to do this you will face other traveling trainers, gym leaders, and the Pokémon League. This time around the game's Mascot is Origin Forme of Giritina. Like its predecessors before a lot of the basics have remained the same, but there are handful of new changes.
Aesthetic Changes
All three main characters have been given some new gear to prepare them to to brave Sinnoh's cold climates. The trainers will also be getting a redesigned Pokétch along with a color scheme of the HP/level box to gray. New Pokémon sprites have been introduced with the addition of new animations for them and the gym leaders. Eterna City has been refurbished with new foliage and building designs with snow now reaching as far south as the city. The Canalave Library and the Cycling Road also had some remodelling as well.
Storyline Changes
Dialga and Palkia will both be availble in the game on Spear Pillar along with the appear of Giratina's Orgin Forme in the alternate dimension the Torn World. The Torn World is a 3D dimension where the locations are turned, floating, and angled in a confusing manner. Team Galatic's plans and HQ have gotten an upgrade, along a new professor and policeman in hot pursuit.
Gameplay Changes
Giratina's Origin Forme can only be present in Pokémon Platinum and is caught that way in the Torn World with the ability levitate. Shaymin can change into its Sky Forme using the Glacidea Flower, a key item obtained in Floroma Town. This item doesn't work at night or when Shaymin is frozen. Shaymin's Sky Forme's ability is Serene Grace and has a higher base Speed & Special Attack stat. GTS has been updated with a new look inside and out and different Wi-Fi modes will alow up to 20 people at a time. The Battle Recorder is a new tool that allows to share your battle records with your friends over GTS. New to Poffin making is the Swalot machine which allows you to throw in and mix berries, that can even be done online. Making it's return in Platnium is the new and improved Battle Frontier appearing in the Battle Zone after defeating the Pokémon League.
The Battle recorder is a new item obtained in Pokémon Platinum that allows you to record your battles. Whether they're online battles or in-game battles is currently unknown. There appear to be several modes of the Battle Recorder. It is likely there is a mode in the Global Terminal that allows you to send out your battles and receive battle recordings from your friends. In Browser Mode, which allows the item's use outside the GTS, you can view your own battles and battles your friends have sent you as well as expunge any battles you do not wish to keep.
Behold! Very cool, and unexpected if I do say so myself. If this could be used offline for any match, that'd be a very interesting tool to use to show others how you caught Pokémon x or y, or some other nifty example for trainers to show their stuff.
A considerably vast array or options more than D/P, it seems.
oh mann!!! this is gunna be a pain because i have almost completed my entire pokedex (non cheat) and once platinum comes out i'll have to start all over again (
but the story line change should be awesome and the sprites are new and improved so yea i cannot wait
This sounds cool! I haven't completed diamond, but I'm close. When I played Diamond (My first game experience with pokemon) I was surprised how fun it was.

yea they were the most memorable and they will stick with me like a gooey bomb sticks onto characters on Brawl, but lets stick to the topic at hand, Pokemon Platinum.
loaded with tons of awesome new features, Platinum looks like it'll keep gameplay going long after you beat the story mode.
But let's not forget the first "Special Version" as Pokemon Platinum may be the last of its kind
Unless the rumors of a Gold/Silver remake are true....
I doubt they would. Gold/Silver remakes would be cool, but it'd be kind of pointless. They remade Red/Blue into Lg/Fr so you can obtain the pokemon that aren'y in the Hoenn, like the Kanto starters or legendaries. The Pokemon from Johto were available mostly through Pokemon Colosseum and XD, and also in Emerald.
And you can get the majority of the pokemon from all regions with the help of those others, the poke radar, swarms, etc....
