Well, beam me up Scotty! Nintendo have co-signed an agreement that indicates that they are investigating new methods of data storage in the area of holographic storage, which theoretically can store up to 1TB or possibly even more. However that TB is just a dream as the technology is being developed and as much as we'd like to see it next generation it is likely it'll be coming later.
For those of us who have no idea what it is then check this out;
Holographic data storage captures information using an optical inference pattern within a thick, photosensitive optical material. Light from a single laser beam is divided into two separate beams, a reference beam and an object or signal beam; a spatial light modulator is used to encode the object beam with the data for storage. An optical inference pattern results from the crossing of the beams’ paths, creating a chemical and/or physical change in the photosensitive medium; the resulting data is represented in an optical pattern of dark and light pixels. By adjusting the reference beam angle, wavelength, or media position, a multitude of holograms (theoretically, several thousand) can be stored on a single volume. The theoretical limits for the storage density of this technique are approximately tens of terabits (1 terabyte = 1,000 gigabytes) per cubic centimeter. In 2006, InPhase technologies published a white paper reporting an achievement of 500 Gb/in.
Confusing, I must say however if it's easy to use and accessible then I'm all for it!

Can we at least get better storage on the Wii this generation first? That sounds great and all but what about now??
At least we rest easy knowing that we'll need absolutely no storage extension on Wii2...
Wtf is that?
*scratches head*
I suppose its good to see them planning ahead. But Wii1 still needs a solution.
Holographic storage actually has a theoretical limit of 30 zettabytes in a compactflash-like form factor. I believe
cue wewy reference?

I think that the technology they're developing has a theoretical limit of "Tens of TBs". So if they're not going the full way I have no idea.
Anyone who needs 30 Zettabytes for personal storage is out their vector.

quiet, hectopascal.
Cosmic will be happy. Now he'll have adequate room for all his pr0n.
Oh, a WEWY reference ... uhhh ...
SOH-CAH-TOA!

You can say that again. It's great that Nintendo is looking ahead, but first the Wii needs some sort of HDD. Plus, it would nice to see actual Dolby Digital 5.1 in a Nintendo system before they release some fancy HDD solution
Nintendo's so zetta slow.
How about fixing current problems before tackling non-existent ones first?
Didn't they already say they were working on a solution?
They said they where working on a solution as soon as the topic was raised.
Everytime people start complaining about it they say the same thing. =/
Enough talk, more action, in my opinion.
Lol, there's not much to do but wait. They said they were working on something and that's it. Just wait...
I wonder what the factorial they'll do about this gen then?
We need more WEWY references.
Nintendo...what's going on in their head? "They have their values, I have mine" >_>
*points at sig*
"Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?!?!?!!?"
Honestly why? Right now we have mere megabytes of storage, and now their thinking of terabytes? That's a huge jump, lets make the wii go to giga before bothering with an amount of storage nobody needs on a console at the moment.
With this kind of announcement, I can see Nintendo (sometime in the future) saying that they will no longer release games on solid media but over the internet for you to store on your holographic HDD.
In my opinion Nintendo don't give a digit about the current wii's issues anymore. Now the development on the Wii2 has begun there's not going to be anything new for the current wii.
