With the brand new Mega Man 9 coming out on WiiWare later this year, other game developers are thinking about bringing gaming back to its 2-D roots.
In an interview with Castlevania’s producer, Koji Igarashi, he showed interest of the possibilities of WiiWare. "With regards to WiiWare, I'm evaluating that right now, and to be honest, I think a 2D Castlevania game on WiiWare might be the right approach."
Igarashi also has previously said that he is interested in how things have turned out for Mega Man 9 and how that WiiWare is an interesting service.
This might get interesting if more game developers start backtracking a step and create more 2-D games. How does a new 2-D Zelda or Mario for WiiWare sound? Any takers?

No thanks on the 2D Zelda or Mario. I'm all for a new 2D Metroid though. Make it happen Nintendo!
Call me old school, but I think some *good* 2d games would be great. I still prefer Mario Bros 3 over all the latest marios.
I doubt they could do that much better with Zelda. There's no reason turning back to 2D with that when it's working so much better with 3D.
And yes I still prefer Super Metroid to the Primes. I love 2D Metroids. That's where it shines.
(Yay for 2D Metroids for the GBA, now lets bring them to WiiWare and DS!
I'm also all for a 2D Castlevania. But just like Zelda, they could get it to work in 3D, but they'd need to but more effort into it. 3D raises so many more problems.
He's right that it "Might be," since from what I've heard Castlevania's 3D outings haven't done to well with its fan base.
Super Castlevania IV is awesome so yeah, I heard the DS games have been pretty good too.
Metroid please. The GBA ones were small steps in the right direction, but give gamers the Super Metroid sequel/fan-ware we've so desperately wanted. Great power-ups, tons of hidden items, large bosses, epic..
Heck, as it stands. Fans are doing more work than Nintendo with the Metroid games.
I'd love to see a Super Metroid WiiWare sequel with more power-ups + more areas to explore.
The old 2D Metroid games were great, but I must admit I prefer the Prime series. They just seem to embody the soul of Metroid so well. There's still the large areas to explore, the puzzles to solve, the enemies to kill, but the action is so much more fast and instinct driven, much like how I'd expect the real Samus to experience her missions. My one note is, I doubt anyone could do Prime as well as Retro did, so maybe they should go back to 2D so they don't ruin the 3D Metroid saga.
Mario may want to go back to 2D. They've seemed to have trouble making 3D Mario games which are as much fun as the old 2D games. Maybe they just can't figure out how to do all the crazy stuff SMB3 did (aside from SMG which did a pretty damn good job).
Zelda has to stay 3D. There's no going back to 2D after getting on your horse and seeing the entire country side of Hyrule spread out in front of you.
Castlevania should definitely stick with 2D games. All of the 3D Castlevania games have sucked tremendously. The GBA and DS games on the other hand have been some of the best 2D gaming experiences since the SNES. If they could bring that sort of great action to the VC, they'd have a magnificent game on their hands.
