Dell Inc. is poised to announce a new mini-laptop computer later this week, a source familiar with the company's plan said on Tuesday, confirming a Wall Street Journal story.

The source said the Dell "mini" would be a low-priced computer that is two-thirds the size of full-featured laptops, which will put it into competition with the Eee PC from Asustek Computer and other rivals in Taiwan and Japan.

The Journal cited "people familiar with the device" as saying the Dell mini notebook is likely to sell for under $400, have a screen size under nine inches, and run either Microsoft Windows or Linux operating system software.

A Dell spokeswoman was not immediately available to comment. The source confirmed that the new Dell model would be revealed on Thursday as part of an announcement with partner Box.net, which supplies online data storage services to Dell.

Yay! Bring on the wave of mini computers, I say. I'm gonna have to get to the point soon where I'm carrying mine around at all times, and I need something smaller than my laptop, and bigger than your standard Blackberry. Anyone else interested in this development?
Right now there is a huge sale on ultra notebooks (minis) over here and I almost picked one up. First, anything on sale over here is almost as cheap as the price in the U.S. but not quite. The cheapest one I've seen here so far is the $220 one but that one is unbuyable (yes, I know that's not a real word) really. The other is around $520 and is a bit better. You can't do much on them but if you just like to email, use the net, use Office, chat, watch movies (not HD), and listen to music then it should suit your just fine.
They are available for purchase on the UK site, I saw this morning.

I have been waiting for the Inspirion 9 for a while now. I got tired of waiting and picked up an Acer Aspire One last week.

The AAO is $300-400 depending on model (considered the best deal in netbooks right now, great keyboard), the eee PC's are the well known brand with tons of community support but they are way overpriced (for the Atom at least), the MSI Wind is impossible to find and kinda pricey, and the upcoming dell looks to be a great deal at $350 (Ubuntu) or $400 (XP).

The Dell is nice because it has bluetooth (AAO can be modded for it). The AAO can come with 120 or 160 HDD (or 8GB SSD), while the Dell has a 16GB SSD only. There is also a ton of community support for the AAO already. I just hope the Dell SSD is better than Acers (the 8GB SSD is considered very slow).

FYI Dell also said tomorrow they would run a special... Inspirion 9 for $99 with purchase of any other laptop. I'll be following that one very closely.
Ooh yeah that Dell deal makes me wish I'd waiting to buy my new laptop, 'cause I coulda replaced my boyfriends while I was at it.
They had an error on their site yesterday when they tried to run the promo... I ordered ONE base model Studio 15 and FIVE mini's for $99 apiece. I doubt the order will actually go through, though.
