show us new hardware and then tell us not till later? WTH is this a strip joint? If the market has shown us anything, consumers love options. Nothing too difficult for them to make a sound decision and whatever they buy they can "upgrade" tot he best it can be. The 360 and PS3 [although different platforms] are excellent examples. They relate to the hardcore, above average/average and causal gamers. Giving opportunity for the casual and above average gamers to "upgrade" their consoles to the hardcore gamer.

Now the DSi is like the Elite system for the 360, instead of focusing on just a single aspect of its features, the DSi makes use of all of them!

WHO EVER THEY HAVE IN THEIR MARKETING NEEDS TO BE FIRED. DSlites are going to continue selling, thts a NO BRAINER because Nintnedo at the moment has a HUGE casual following; parents and children. The DSi will still meet expectations due to Nintendo's fan base and ability to gather audiences from other groups! People didnt want the DS because it lacked what the PSP had. they added Online Web browsing and that supplemented sales. Give them a ddevice that is on par or even more advanced then its competitor then that audience will want the better all around device.

I agree about the moron in marketing. Reggie, during an interview with G4, even said himself that the DS wouldn't hurt from this, because the person that already owns the DS would just pass it on to the "casual" of the family, and from there he/she would share the magic of the DS with his/her friends while the previous owner gives Nintendo more money for the DSi. Which is what I was planning on doing, anyway. I'm still going to try and import just to let my friends know how this new one does compared to the DSlite, which I love.

Edit: Maybe with the DS situation that Japan has had in the past, perhaps Nintendo decided to play it safe with the DSi, seeing as how it's supposedly this huge improvement over the DSLite?

Maybe they are playign it too safe? Relieving in the past of the market failure of the micro in the US. Remember how loved the mircro was in Japan? Then they decided to ship it in the states and only 20 were sold, i think i almost bought one. i shouldve.

but this is different. the micro was in the wrong place at the wrong time IMO. it wouldve done well if it was a delay int he DS by like a year in a half. in a marketing perspective.

anyways, i dont see any problem with the DSi being sold in the US at all. Reggie was right on the ball with that sentence. It wouldnt hurt the DSlite at all in sales. Just providing OPTIONS for the consumer, and not even complicated ones either.

SO there's two possible problems with this.
One: DS2 will be a long while before it comes around.
Two: DS2 will come out before/around when DSi does.


I like option 2. Though its a problem for Nintendo.

I personally won't be buying DS1 either way though.
DS2 should be around the corner, and no point "upgrading" now when in 6 months it'll be discontinued and I'll be forced to buy the successor.

Bringing the successor doesn't make much business sense to me. I think they planed to release the DSi in Japan this year first because lite sales were slowing down there and have been for some time. This is no surprise and it looks like we may be seeing Platinum Mid/Late 09 as well.

The Pokemon Ranger game is coming out in the first half quarter of 09, so Platinum would probably come around Q2 09 at the earliest.

yea Kirby Super Star Ultra was just released IGN gave it a 7.8. The game is a remake of a couple of classic Kirby titles. So far Canvas Curse, the first DS Kirby game, is still rated highest.

The DSi currently is heading down the same path as it... THird alteration to the GBA DS; released in Japan first, really successful there; brought to NA a year later; DS DS2 already announced; no one buys it.

I'm not mad at this at all; I'm mad at the fact that I might be wrong, and DS2 won't be coming for a long while.

And if the DSi is supposed to be the successor.. I am very, very, VERY disappointed.

Besides, a successor is supposed to have BC (meaning there is a new data type). The DSi has none, it's simply a DS, no GBA.
In fact, it can't play some DS games. (GH:OT)

How are you disappointed with the DSi? What is it youre looking for from a sucessor?

This IMO is a major step for Nintendo, a major BABY step. =] Nintendo is moving from just games to finally seeing that platforms cant just specialize anymore, you have to have a bit of everythign to impress the consumers and COMPETE with their competition. PSP3000 compared to the DSLite [not DSi] is a big difference. The PSP can do so much more then the DSlite, despite the innovative gaming. But when you have a device that stacks up tot eh PSP3000 [and possibly even better] then you have the upper hand once again. This was a excellent business move in a few ways, but this was a bad one at the same time.


So sales in Japan were slowing down; what couldve been done besides upgrading a already successful model? Answer: Produce actual games. What brought int he sales wasn't the device's features alone. It was how the features were used in successful ways [LoZH, MP:H, Pheonix Wright, ect] The software brought in the sales.

For a successor, I'm looking for duel touch screen (which the DSi has) that will be supported for games (which the DSi won't) and better graphics (DSi doesn't). Also a new cartridge type, one with more memory. (CUrrently, DS games are capped at around 120MB, have you seen MicroSDs? They could make 16GB cartridges for that size. More memory, bigger games. It's all good.

The DS's components are old already, yet price drops haven't come. Even with these added features they could sell it at the same price as they do DSLites now. Not up the price.


Differences between successors and upgrades.
GB -> GBC Upgrade
GB -> GBA Successor
GBA - > Micro Upgrade
GBA -> DS Successor
etc, etc.

The main difference between an upgrade and a successor is graphical and processing power. The DS is looking ok for now, but by the end of '09 it will be really, really dated.

Exactly. How can you back up the DSi and understand this?


I don't know about the majority of handheld video game buyers, but I buy them to play video games. Not take bad resolution photos or listen to music, or browse the web.

I buy it for one specific function; they throw in 5 more and up the price 80$ for stuff I won't use.

Why do they feel the need to turn into a Frankenstein PSP? If we follow the PSP formula, it shouldn't be any better correct?



Everyone owns a DS, an upgrade will only prompt a few "techie/hardcore" buyers. The (now) main consumers (casual) won't eat this up at all. It would have been a better business move to make an actual successor. You know, make a new cartridge type, possibly one with more memory; for bigger games.

My excitement is pretty simple, as i stated before the DSi isnt like anything that Nintendo has EVER released.The Wii/GCN were never media ports. Ok the Wii shows nice pictures from a SD card, but wow Internet browser, a 3.2 mp camera, mp3 music playback... does that sound very Nintendo like?

Of course not, this is the step that Ive been talkign about Nintendo taking ever since I joined this site. and they are finaly taking it. so yeah i support the DSi. Despite a lot of bad musiness moves on behalf of NoJ

If this fails. You'll see what happened with the Micro happen here. How long was the Micro even advertised for. I remember seeing it in stores maybe two or three times.

I doubt it will fail. the micro was a fail for a lot of reasons, mainly TIMING.

The SP was near the end of its span. The DS was already released. Where did the Micro fit in to all this? NOWHERE.

DSi will not fail. It will be very successful, but it all depends on how Nintendo manages this.

So far, Im upset.


1. DSi launch window from JPN/PAL to the US is more the 6 months. That is way too long. If the DSi is to be launched LONGER then that, then they might as well say, "we're working on the DSlites successor."


2. Nintendo Points can not be used on BOTH platforms. The stupidest thing Ive ever heard.

DSi is just an upgrade liek the DSlite, but a worth upgrade just like the DSlite. I do agree that, maybe this tech couldve been used on the actual successor.

It shoudlve been the visual capabilities of the PSP3000 with all that cool stuff!

I personally think they should have left us with the DSPhat until they had prepped the DSi. Then it would be much better accepted.

What happens when the Wii (if ever) slows down, is that when this heavily rumoured WiiHD will be released?

Going by Nintendo's current strategy... yes.

Nah, DSPhat wouldve caved in like a fat person on a diet walking around candyland. It was visually unpleasing, and even though not everyone was pleased with the DSlite the DSlite was a complete change and overhaul in sales. DSlite was Nintendos BEST MOVE.

The DSphat was visually unappealing and even though we are all mostly hardcore gamers, people do get to feel a bit self conscious. Plus I remember tryign to play my DSPhat at a Bus stop and could see becuase the sun was too bright. Never was the case with my DSlite.

DSi will be a success. Just based on what they have so far and marketing. Its all about timing, this is just akward timing. Not perfect but not bad.

Nintendo isnt dropping the ball is the portables, they seem to really have that down, its the home console thats lacking.

The Micro would have been much more well received then the SP.. had it not been released after the DS was already announced.
Like it was in Japan. (It was a hit, and honestly, I would have bought a Micro had the DS not been announced myself [I didn't have a GBA to begin with xD] )


The reason you're saying the Micro failed is the same reason I'm saying the DSi will..

DS2 will be announced by the time DSi hits NA.

If it doesn't; I'll be sad. But I still wouldn't buy it, cause the DS2 would literally be announced within 3 months of its release here. Or at least I predict so.

I can not predict the future but i can see the market. and the DSi is in a interesting spot. Not a good one, but not particular bad. If you looked at the spot the micro was in, it was horrible. In Japan yeah it sold. But how long did that lasst? A bit less then 6 months. In the states, mircos didnt last too long either, I mremeber trying to get peopel to buy them and they asked why? the screen was too small, my child couldnt play it. i heard that all day, it appealed to older teens yea. but the DS was better in everyway and so was the SP.

I dont see the DS2 announced for another 2 1/2 years, DSi success and DSlites success. The DSi will be upgraded to the point where its a successor to the DS.. with more features. This is just testing grounds for Nintendo.

The GBC (which was pretty much a successor to the GB since it had games the GB couldn't play) lasted 3 years, the GBA lasted three years, the DS is about to finish it's fourth year. It's long over due for a successor.

And if the DSi actually is Nintendo idea of a successor, the last foot of mine still on the Nintendo train will finally hop off with the rest of me.

Afriad of a little progress Rawr? Thats ok if you are. But the DSi has all what takes to be successful. Lucky for us, it'll prolly never reach us for another year, NoA is still rollign on the coatails of the DSlite. While most peopel will import, try to understand the instructions and find out that importign was a waste because the cool DSi only games ares till in Japan for another year.

Oh yeah when was GA announced? Now when did it end? GBA/SP/Micro are the longest lasting portable run for NIntendo thus far. What makes you think that DS/DSlite/DSi wouldnt go the distance as well?

Lets see what the DSi has to offer...
-MP3 player that can only play select file types: Who in this word does not have a MP3 player? If you're one of the 3 people in the world without one, you can go grab a 1GB MP3 for 25$.
-3MP camera: ... Ok, I have no idea what anybody can do with a camera with less then 6MP. Some people like they're 2MP camera phones.. I like being able to tell what I took a picture of when I go back and look at it again.
-0.3MP camera: ... yeah... as if 3 wasn't bad enough.
-Internet browser: I have no idea how functional this will be.. first of all, you'd need to be within a wireless signal, and if you're within a wireless signal, there's defiantly a computer on hand. Computer web browser > browser on anything else.
-No GBA slot: No backwards compatibility? And what about all those games that required a GBA slot to activate certain aspects of the game? (Pokemon is a big one, as is GH:OT, and other games like HM, etc)
-Bigger screens: not as good as you'd think. Current games aren't made at that resolution so you'd only get black borders, or a stretched image.. which would look horrid; And suck your battery dry.
-Duel touch screen: finally something good!
-+80$

With all these energy sucking leeches Nintendo better have installed a bigger battery pack.

Again, this is why I'm disappointed. I'm sure that most people would eat it right up so long as an actual successor isn't announced.
After all, people shove money at "old" technology with an apple sticker on it.

Its not about the how they use the tech its about Nintendo moving on to another medium. Name another product that utilizes all of this stuff, that isnt the GCN Panasonic Q?

this is progress for Nintendo and its fan base. This is just the first step. all those things YOU pointed out, you could say the same thing for any other gaming system portable adn home console. Then we all would be disappointed right?

The people love features, no one wants a item that does a single thing. If that were the case iPod would never be what it is today. PS3 woould still be garbage and the DSLite will just play games.

And I think the computer browser rules all is just stupid IMO. Ive seen the PS3 web browser and its darn right almost just like a computer, if you have the PS3 chat pad [similiar to the 360 chat pad] then BAM you have a awesoem web browser with NO FAULTS.
