Full Version: Are hardcore gamers "insatiable"?

Ever since Nintendo's E3 press conference this year, much talk has been bandied about claiming the company has abandoned the hardcore gamer (or just "core gamer," as Nintendo likes to say). The company took its recent Media Summit event in San Francisco to directly reach out to the enthusiast press and hardcore gamers with several new titles like a Punch-Out! remake, the turn-based strategy game Fire Emblem DS, and a sequel to the Japanese shooter Sin and Punishment. But speaking with VentureBeat, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime laments that we gamers are never satisfied.

"The gaming enthusiast that buys a tremendous amount of games is truly insatiable," Fils-Aime says. "As an example, in March, we launched Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In April, we launched Mario Kart. In later April, we launched Wii Fit. Then, in July, at E3, they say, 'where are the games?' They say they want the next Mario game. Super Mario Galaxy isn't even a year old yet."

While we here at IGN Nintendo were pretty happy with the Media Summit last week, Reggie still appears exasperated with the core market. "We believe today that we have shown a plethora of games and genres that can satisfy the most casual to the most core. Even that doesn't seem like it's enough."

What do you think? Should Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii be enough to satisfy us for the entire year? Should we be content to keep playing last year's Mario Galaxy?

Hollywood releases new movies, do they not? Videogames as an entertainment industry should be no different! Sequels, new standalone titles, roll them in!

It's this sort of logic that caused me to sell my Wii months back.
I consider myself to be a "core" gamer and as such I am more than satisfied with what the PS3 and Xbox 360 had to offer last year, this year, and next year. I understand that the Wii is largely catering to another audience, but I was even moderately satisfied with the Wii over the period when we saw Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, and Brawl over 8 months or so. That needs to be more consistent.

Every word that comes out of Reggie's mouth with regards to the Wii's core lineup sounds like a desperate attempt to convince himself that there is enough to satisfy the core gamers and as a result he just keeps digging a deeper hole.

What.
The.
Fuk?

Funny; out of the games he said, only two where close enough to be considered "core" games... and he didn't mention the most "core" games they have.. TP and MP3...

I think Reggie really has no clue what a core game is.
Let alone what core gamers want.

Thing is, I don't mind the game line-up at the moment. I am kinda okay with it, we do after all have Brawl, Galaxy and Corruption (they leave a lot to be desired but at least they are out).

MY problem is, the lack of interesting games coming up for the Wii.
Well Nintendo can't be the only ones blamed for the lack of games coming out. They're working on developing a new Zelda, Pikmin and other stuff. The 3rd parties need to wake the f*ck up and develop some decent games.

Again, prime remakes made you do a 360 turn on your feelings to Nintendo =/

No, they temporarily put them to rest, because Metroid Prime 1 was the greatest game of last gen. And with Wii controls it can only get better. Mmmm. Pure awesome.

Nintendo are obviously still tripping over themselves. But if I was to pick two consoles, the Wii would be one of them.
Well remaking Prime was a good idea...
Its the best idea they've had for awhile. Ironic really.
The other consoles wouldn't fare as well either if only Sony and Microsoft were making quality games for their system. That's how it's always been with Nintendo. They make good games for their systems, everyone else makes sh!t and people blame Nintendo. That's not how things should work.
What you need to ask is when they'll stop playing Wii-shovel. It's like bukkake all over our faces.

Well, what sort of example are Nintendo setting. Wii Fit, Wii Music, Wii Play, writing off Animal Crossing as a hardcore game, that's not the greatest of examples.

Well someone needs to step up and prove Nintendo wrong. But no one else can do that and when their crap doesn't sell they say 'only Nintendo games sell on Nintendo consoles'. That's because Nintendo games aren't sh!t
^Correction, Wii Play; And soon to be Wii Music.
You know what I mean though. And yes, Rooster. That is true. But to get that kind of support behind those sort of games (Okami, No More Heroes, ect.) would be difficult, especially to challenge the annoying support that the likes of Wii Sport, Wii Fit have established. With Wii Music no doubt to continue the crappiness.
Nintendo is riding the cash wave, so their stance on game won't change unless the Wii owners themselves stop buying certain types of games. The old adage is right...If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

nintendo games arent sht because they can release a game whenever they feel the game is ready to be released. nintendo also gives the worst support to 3rd party devs. i cant really imagine any one of them being excited that yet again, nintendo has the upper hand at being able to release games with the new wiimote add-on. one of the most popular non nintendo games to come out recently was guitar hero: on tour. unfortunately, the new DSi wont be able to support the game's peripheral.

it's typical nintendo. they keep all their cards close and they dont let anyone in on it until their product is far superior to anything anyone else creates. why put the blame on 3rd party devs? the second they catch up, nintendo releases something that's years ahead of anyone else.

why these nintendo core fans continue to support this is beyond me.

I dont blame 3rd party devs, not after the awesome job of Team Fuzion with MoH2 on the Wii, High Votage is doing an amazing job as well. 3rd party devs need to be able to just take control and use the creative freeedom given.
