I took a trip down memory lane to see some of the first anime I was ever introduced to. You know what? Something is missing from modern anime by comparison. A distinct quality... be it the devil-may-care attitude over how much of a mindfuck you might get over the themes, or sick stomach by the shocking ways people may die.
It feels alien. Interesting and exotic.
Some in particular I went through during my nostalgia trip on Youtube;
Armitage III:
One could say it's inspired by Blade Runner with it's conflict of Thirds, androids who are near 100 percent likened to humans and capable of reproduction being eradicated by their xenophobic creators, who did not foresee their ability to reproduce.
M.D. Geist:
A bloodbath of shock value and apocalyptic hell. The Most Dangerous Geist, a cloned super-soldier deemed so destructive he was cryogenically frozen and fired into orbit falls back to earth, awakening to fight a war that ended long ago. Anyone and everyone is his enemy.
Battle Angel:
A cybernetics surgeon reconstructs a mess of an android upon finding her broken body in the landfill. At first the robot-girl seems innocent enough, but when a crisis comes she awakens with the martial prowess of a killing art from her past life; one capable of dismantling the toughest cyborgs piece by piece.
Fist of the North Star:
You know I couldn't mention 80's anime without bringing this one up! Mad Max meets Bruce Lee with martial arts mayhem in a land of confusion.
If you've any older gems to share, feel free.
