I think I'm starting to see what your problem is! Ha! Okay let me clarify... Nintendo is using a UFC right? It's the same code for all games, but you STILL has to log in everytime you want to PLAY online. You just don't have to log in when you turn the system on. get it? You have an individual username when you want to play, but don't have one when you just want to turn on the system.
I know this stuff. The "username" isn't technically a username like an XBL Gamertag which is what I was hoping for on the Wii. The username can be changed at will and means nothing in relation to your code or system. I did seem to overlook that, completely forgot, but then if you're at a friend's house or you aren't playing on your own system then you don't have any access to your friend's list. And as far as I know you don't log in with the way of entering a password to sign in, and I don't expect that you will ever have to log out, and who knows if we'll even have the option to, since WiiConnect24 will have us signed on to Wi-Fi constantly.
Haha! What?! Are you serious? The Xbox USES the UFC system! You can't change the username whenever you want to! The UFC system just tells you whenever someone signs in, for every game. The announcement basically said "We aren't using the individual friend codes anymore, we're doing what Microsoft is doing".
I said that your username, or display name on the Wii's Wi-Fi can be changed at any time. Not your XBL username, which stays constant through every game. I don't see how XBL can be compared to a UFC. An a single friend code is closer to a system like Microsoft's but it still can't entirely compare. You may not be able to change the username whenever you want with XBL but I don't see why you would want to (in the situation that you be using a gamertag like system, but with Nintendo's single friend code set up, being able to change your display name makes a lot of sense)
I was basically saying that everyone in my friend's family would have their own online gaming account, and then after they each sign in they'd have their own friends list and so on and so forth. With a UFC system you don't have to sign into an account everytime you turned on your Wii, but WOULD have to sign onto your account everytime you wanted to play online. Kinda like logging into WiiLoaded, you have your own amount of posts, own rep, and own status, but in the Wii's case you wouldn't have to sign in everytime you wanted to use the computer... It's always on.
Finished.
So based on what you're saying Nintendo has allowed seperate Wi-Fi accounts per system? I might have just not understood it correctly but that's what I picked up. As far as I know Nintendo hasn't made much Wi-Fi info public yet. Who knows they could actually do what you're talking about which would be a huge improvment over what we're expecting right now. But from all the info I could gather the Wii will follow the DS with it's Wi-Fi strategy. One FC per system, a small display name section that isn't set in stone and that the user can change at their own discretion, and a friend's list consisting of all the people who's FCs you've chosen to accept. That means that everyone in that household, and whoever is playing on that particular system would be associated to that FC and if you're playing on a system that isn't your own then you don't have all you personal data. Plus if your Wii's damaged then you gotta start all over with a new code. A universal Wi-Fi network username (like a gamertag) would avoid these kinds of problems and would let give you access to personal data like your friend's list on someone else's console. Although I'm glad that Nintendo at least chose to make the FCs set by system, not the system + software combo of the DS since discs can scratch and have a higher chance of becoming unusable when compared to a console. And tell me, how long does it take you log onto WiiLoaded? Maybe 30 secs max. Is it really that much of a hassel to sign onto a universal account for half a minute? And like I've said before, you could just set it to stay logged in until the next person came by, logged you out and then logged into their own account. I really don't see what's so hard about it and why Nintendo prefered the UFC system.
The thing is though, that no one knows whether or not Nintendo is going to use the account thing, even though it's highly probable. The only reason you'd have to share friends on a DS is because Nintnendo doesn't expect you to let your friends play online with YOUR handheld system, but it'd be a dumb move to have everyone in the house (especially a house of 14) share the same friend's as someone else in the family. That'd be defeating the purpose of the "security" aspect of the UFC system. The UFC system is in effect to ensure safety, and to protect you from strangers. To have everyone share a friends list would contradict what they said.
Well a shared friend's list so far seems like the way Nintendo's going to go, because the friend lists are arranged by the user's friend code, so I don't think Nintendo would've implemented seperate lists, because that defeats the purpose of the UFC and if they are going to do that then a system more similar to XBL would make more sense.
I think there is failure here in understanding online gaming. No online gaming on a console was successful until Xbox Live. Look at the architecture--THERE IS NO USERNAME AND PASSWORD. It's idiocy to think everytime you start the system you need to login with a username and password like Nintendo said the other option was. You just make an account and it's registered on the console, no need to do anything other than press A on "Sign-In". Ugh, fvckin idiots.
wow, what a heated debate. so the friend codes should be like the microsoft gamertag? im not understanding much of this

Plus if your Wii's damaged then you gotta start all over with a new code. A universal Wi-Fi network username (like a gamertag) would avoid these kinds of problems and would let give you access to personal data like your friend's list on someone else's console.
Sorry, I just had to come back to this.
My Wii's been acting up recently (the disc drive makes a really lound vibrating and almost grinding noise when a game is being played. But not all the time. Maybe every third day). I've contacted Nintendo and they've said that I'll need to send it in for repairs, but after the problem stopped I sent another email saying it wouldn't be necessary but would keep in touch if it started again. So like I said, it happens periodically but I've been putting off sending it off for two reasons. 1. I wanted to complete Red Steel (done) and get a chance to borrow Splinter Cell first, 2. If it's getting repaired then that's a good thing because I'll be able to keep all my data, but that would be too much work for Nintendo I think and I'd more than likely just get a new console. Save data isn't a problem since I've got an SD, but friend codes are gonna be a b**** to put back in. If Nitendo only allowed you to export your friends list to an SD. So there's one of the large points I was trying to make when I wrote this. Everyone who has me in their friends list better be ready for a new code in the near future.
Online account similar to XBL >>>>> Universal Friend Code
They should of looked at Counter Strikes online community and learned from that!
