No Credit Card? No Wii for You!

Not long after we originally reported that GameStop would be the exclusive retailer with Wii demo kiosks, we found out through the rumor mill that GameStop would require you to leave your credit card at the front desk as collateral before trying out the Wii. Why you ask? So that no one would be tempted to run off with a controller when the clerks aren't paying attention. This way no one will be running out of GameStop with a Wii controller in their hands, at least not without losing a credit card.

A GameStop manager apparantly let this slip out after hearing at the GameStop manager's conference that credit cards would be required as deposits to play the Wii kiosks. The chance of users stealing controllers and hitting others may have been key factors that came into Wal-Mart, and other major retailers', decisions on not to support Wii kiosks.

According to Kotaku.com, Nintendo tried various security methods on the kiosk (notice the controllers are strapped to the kiosk above) but nothing worked well and they left it up to the retailers to police themselves. It would be nice if GameStop would allow customers to leave items such as debit cards, or even cash deposits as well, if they don't happen to have a credit card. It seems pretty believeable but don't forget that it's still a rumor and things could change very quickly.

Thanks Cloud!

Even if it IS a rumor, I don't like it. A scam. A SCAM, I say. If they had wires for the contollers that were connected to the kiosk(s). They wouldn't have a problem. >=\
This has got to be fake. That would just be stupid. Reggie Fils-Aime alreafy stated that the controlers won't require much movement so I don't see why they wouldn't just keep it attached with a wire.

Doesn't affect me either way, with the XB360 set up in our local EB games they are wired to the console which is hidden away... so I don't see why the Wii can't be the same.
sounds reasonable.
It sounds like a fair trade, but I wish they had a wire that kept the controller connected the kiosk, like Office Depot does, so that it's impossible to steal unless you buy it.
Bedsides the wii mote has to be registered by the wii sensor bar, so in they can make it so that that wii mote will only work on THAT sensor bar, besides they could also make wii motes separetly for the kiosk's (WITH wires)

maybe ten years ago when there wasnt identity theft

it really does sounds reasonable.. I used to work at Toys R Us in the video game dept, and on my day off I came in to work [we just love our job like that] and saw the PSP demo kiosk missing. I was like WTF how do a person steal a demo PSP from in front of us like that?! Seems as if my firends wasnt paying attention to the theifs and they took a whole 7mins and stole the damn thing. So yes this is quite reasonable.
It seems a bit over reacting. I know has to be a way to not have to put your credit card. I mean to me its seems stupid.
Well it was a rumor if I did need a Credit card I would just secretly use it without them using if they have a booth I will Run in there Toungue Well I would have to go to america also.

off topic:I deleted so know one else would need to know Toungue
No its quite alright! Thanks for the input I am fixing it now x.x
The USA is different from Japan. In Japan they had wireless controllers for the 360 with no guard unlike in the US where they are docked to the kiosk with a plastic bridge. Anyways who cares, it's just the kiosk.
Heh... Some people don't have credit cards. What about them? They can't try out the system? Why not just wire the contoller onto the kiosk?
It seems fair
to me.
To bad the Wii kiosk location thread just closed . I found one in minnesota. But they didn't have it set up just yet. The nintendo rep wasn't there.
