The director talks about controller usage and more.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl director Masahiro Sakurai made an appearance at last week's Tokyo Game Show as part of a talk event hosted by Metal Gear Solid producer Hideo Kojima. The topic of Smash Bros. Brawl came up only once, with Sakurai assuring that development is proceeding smoothly with the game.

It turns out that Sakurai had a bit more to say on the subject, but he was holding out for an interview with Japan's Weekly Famitsu. This week's issue contains the text of the interview.

Mostly, Sakurai reinforced statements he'd made in the past about his big Wii project. Smash Bros. Brawl will definitely see Japanese release in 2007, he said, although he wouldn't commit to a more specific time frame.

Following a discussion in which Sakurai commented that many Wii games seem to be tailored around the Wii controller, Famitsu asked if Smash Bros. Brawl won't be using the controller's special functionality at all. "At the very least, you won't be using it during normal play," responded Sakurai.

Smash Bros. Brawl seems to be getting all of Sakurai's attention at the moment. Famitsu asked if he's working on anything aside from the Wii title and a recent concert that he lead in Tokyo. Apparently, Sakurai has gotten many offers, but he's turned them all down. "I feel the need to fully take on the responsibility when taking on a job. This has become even more important since becoming a freelancer. If you take on two projects, you definitely won't be able do a good job with a game as big as Smash Bros. Brawl."

While Nintendo didn't have a presence at the Tokyo Game Show, and thus didn't show off anything from Smash Bros. Brawl, it's possible that we'll learn more when the big Japanese Wii tour kicks off in November.

its not much news, but its nice to know that the game is still being, seeing as we havent heard any news about the game since june. 5 MONTHS people, 5 MONTHS.

May not be new news, but its still a good find... hmm, the fact that he won't commit to a more solid time frame than 2007 in concerning... especially since thats the Japanese release. But the longer they work on it the better it will be.
Aw crap that means it won't come out till next year. Which means I won't be able to sleep for another year.
Haha, just imagine... another year, there is a higher chance that most of the characters will return.
That is a big plus. I would love to see the godliness of G&W one more time.
i liked to see everyone return, including G&W, but i wouldnt call him godly
Meh, I hope they don't spend all of this time on the game and mess up.

Thats called being a "Negative Nancy"

The game will rock... if it doesn't then we still have SSBM to fall back on, that game will always be around to enjoy.

Hoping they don't mess up is being a "Negative Nancy"? Ok.

Anyway, back to the topic. Even though that's not a lot of news, it's still nice to know they're working on it and that Sakurai is working full time on the product.
Yeah it is, he is pretty damn committed to this title, which can only mean good things for us as gamers.
I know that waiting for this game is killing everybody on the inside but the longer we wait the better it will be. But if the games releases after May of 2007 I will be a bit Pissed off.

1. Negative Nancy

Someone who commonly whines, complains, or looks at the bad side of things.

Get it straight. I didn't say they were going to do bad nor did I say I hoped they would fail. I said I hope they don't mess up after all of this work. Bottom line. Assuming they're going to do good and having no worries whatsoever makes you an optimistic ninny. Heh, ninny. Anyway, blindly following something and presuming that it's going to be a work of art proves your bliss-filled ignorance.

Don't take it personally, I just despise name calling.

I have faith in Sakurai and his team, true there is a chance the game could screw up... hell that chance comes with alot of games (It happened with Mario Sunshine).

If it is by chance a bad game, thats fine... I'll just forget it and stick with SSBM until the next one comes out, which hopefully won't be bad.

And also, as they say "ignorance is bliss." lol
It's cool. I'm actually expecting this game to be the greatest multiplayer game of all time. High expectations, but it's something that only Sakurai could deliver.
Indeed it is, especially if its better than SSBM's multiplayer... which was IMO to date one of the most fun multiplayer games I've ever laid my hands upon.
didnt sakurai say that SSBB would be the last SSB game? i thought i heard that somewhere. that isnt good news for us gamers though Sad

i'd be a little mad, but there'd be other wii, gcube, and vc games to occupy my time.

wha...? Never! Nintendo would never kill off one of it's greatest games. I think the longevity of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid proves that.

Lol, that's kinda like someone saying Galaxies, is the last Mario game.
Or like saying that Earthbound would be the last E...er, oops.
