I download my brushes from daviantart.
Make sure the brushes work with your program, it usually says in the brush discription on what its compatiable with. I'm sure they'll have some brushes for Corel Paint. (Or what ever you'll be using.)
You might want to clean renders with a soft brush, zoom up and get rid of those out of place colours, like the white around your Link.
I find that it's not usually a good Idea to let the render pop out from the bottom, unless you see the bottom of the render. When it cuts like that it just doesn't look good.
I'd say let the hat pop out, but make the bg bigger and touch the cut out areas of the render, and add a border. (3 pxl black overlay.)
