Say goodbye to Heroes and hello to No More Heroes. Only in a world where something named Wii is the hot toy for Christmas could that sentence actually make sense.

The mysterious game that has been known for most of this year as Heroes now has a new name. The latest issue of Famitsu reveals that the all original Wii adventure game is now known as No More Heroes.

Heroes or No More Heroes, this game has gotten much of its hype due to its development background. Although Spike is set to publish the game in Japan, the title is being developed by Grasshopper Manufacturer and directed by Goichi Suda. You may remember these names from Capcom's stylish Killer 7. Other talent includes Shigeto Koyama, of Eureka Seven and Top wo Nerae 2! fame, who's in charge of weapon and vehicle design, and character designer Yusuke Kozaki, known for his work on Speed Grapher.

Famitsu has first details on the game. In No More Heroes, you play as Travis Touchdown, a geek who wins a Beam Katana (a weapon that resembles a Light Saber) through an online auction and uses the weapon to start a new career as a professional killer. One day, an assassin named Helter Skelter appears before Travis and the two face off in a battle. Travis emerges victorious and finds himself in the presence of Silvia Christel, a French chick who claims to be an agent with the UAA (we're not entirely sure, but this appears to stand for United Assassins Association). Silvia gives Travis official rank of 11 in the organization.

No More Heroes takes place in the city of Santa Destroy, which is designed to look like a big city in the Western United States. You're free to explore the town to your liking, taking on missions large and small to collect money and purchase new weapons, although the game's storyline progresses only when you take on big killing jobs from the UAA. Your day begins in your motel room, where you change your clothes and get ready for a day out on the town. You can walk around town if you like, or you can speed around on your futuristic Schpeltiger motor bike.

Travis's clothing has special signifinace in the game. Travis is a big anime geek, so his shirts tend to sport anime-style witch characters. You'll also find wrestler and fighter designs. Grasshopper drafted Okama, the character designer for the opening of the recent Japanese television hit Densha Otoko, to create over 100 t-shirt designs.

T-shirts aside, No More Heroes is all about using your Beam Katana to defeat enemies. When fighting, you position the Wiimote facing up, centered, or facing down in order to move Travis into one of three fighting positions. To perform standard attacks, you repeatedly press the A button.

The game makes more direct use of the controller in some situations. When performing finishing moves, you're required to swing the controller in accordance with on-screen prompts. You're also required to shake the controller to power up your Beam Katana's energy meter.

In addition to basic foes, you'll also find bigger rivals. Travis wants to be the number one killer, and in order to do that, he'll have to defeat the remaining ten killers that rank above him. Only one rival has been introduced so far. Shinobu wears a short school girl outfit and attends Santa Destroy high school, but one look at her katana will convince you that she's earned her rank of 8 in the UAA.

No More Heroes is listed in Famitsu as being just 35% complete, but with a Japanese release due for Summer 2007. Suda hopes to sell one million copies of the game worldwide, suggesting that an international version is in planning.

This is an interview with No More Heroes developer from IGN and I'm pretty sure this interview took place before the game's name change.

IGN: In the Heroes trailer, the hero (Travis Touchdown) and Helter Skeltor use a gun and sword. How does that control with the Wiimote in the game?

Suda: Actually Helter Skeltor is your enemy and only Travis Touchdown uses a sword to fight against enemies. He's a sword master, so you can defend yourself against enemies using it.

IGN: Will you be using other different kinds of swords, or just one?

Suda: You can use different kinds of swords. Miss Naomi is a professional weapons maker, and she can make various kinds of swords, so you can buy them from her but they're quite expensive.

IGN: Does the game have RPG elements? For example if I use one katana throughout the whole game, will my skills with that katana become better?

Suda: You can level up via experience points, but we haven't decided the specific details of how the system will work.

IGN: So the Wiimote controls the sword movement, does the nunchuck attachment control movement at all?

Suda: Yes, you can use the nunchuck to move the character and attack the enemy by pushing a button, or by swinging the sword. It's a very simple control scheme.

IGN: Does the game use a similar engine to Killer 7 or is it a completely new engine?

Suda: Yeah, it's totally different.

IGN: So why did you choose the same graphic style as Killer 7?

Suda: As you've seen in the trailer, the graphics are similar to Killer 7, but in the game the graphics will be a little different from the trailer. It'll be more illustration-based, with 3D maps. I think you'll be surprised when you see the game!

IGN: The hero of the game is Travis Touchdown, will you be able to use only Travis or other characters?

Suda: Yeah, Travis is the only hero in the game.

IGN: Will you have non-playable partners that will accompany you in the game?

Suda: You will have partners that will help you in the game, such as Naomi, but you'll have to fight your enemies by yourself, so there won't be any partners in the game as far as actual battling goes.

IGN: Will you have any online functions in Heroes? Has it been decided yet?

Suda: We may use Wi-Fi with the game, but we haven't decided on that just yet.

IGN: For Heroes, the trailer had a ranking from 11 until 1. How is the game being designed? Is it a mission-based game or a sandbox-style game?

Suda:
The goal of the game is to defeat all ten hitmen, so there are ten boss battles in the game. But yes, it is mission-based.

IGN:
So will it be 8 - 10 levels or something?

Suda: There will be a main map with ten stages to select from across it.

IGN: So how exactly are you going to find the bosses in the game? Will you have to fight through minions or will it just be the boss? Will it be GTA-Style?

Suda: First, Heroes is a free-roaming game, so you can move wherever you want freely. It's very different from Killer 7, which was very linear. The map represents the west coast of America, namely California, but it's set in a small town. You can ride in a car, or in a bike, or whatever, it's pretty free and open.

IGN: So, the Heroes trailer was uploaded a few months ago, but it was quickly brought down. What was the reason for that?

Suda: Actually we didn't expect the trailer to be uploaded so soon! That's why we took it down. The Tokyo Game Show was supposed to be the proper time to debut the title.

IGN: Will the game support widescreen/progressive scan mode?

Suda: Maybe!

IGN: When is the game expected for release?

Suda:
Both in US and Europe you'll be playing Heroes before 2008, so sometime in 2007.

IGN: Why did you choose the Wii for Heroes?

Suda: People will probably buy the Wii and play family games like Wii Sports, so we decided to develop Heroes for the Wii because gamers might get tired of the family games eventually. Also, people who are going to buy the Wii are interested in trying something different, something that's an extraordinary action game.

IGN: Killer 7 was on the GC, and Heroes is on the Wii, is Suda51 a big fan of Nintendo and its mission statement to make games that are accessible to everyone?

Suda: In the development environment, the Wii is very easy to develop games for because Nintendo supports developers quite a lot. I'm happy to make games for Nintendo because I'm a big fan of the company.

IGN: Are you afraid that games are getting too expensive to develop?

Suda: Well, Grasshopper isn't a big company, we're really small, and to develop new games and projects, the Wii is the best platform for us right now. The budget for developing a Wii game very reasonable for developers who are doing new projects. On other platforms it can be very expensive to make games. If we made games for the PS3 or 360, it'd require a huge budget.
I just read that interview off IGN. It seems like an interesting game.. not that much information has been given but the little detail here and there do seem to make the game appealing. I especially enjoyed Killer 7 and the free roam with a similar style really makes it super.
It's shaping up to be an amazing game, but someone had to say this... Engrish strikes again!

“The basic slash is on the A button on the Wii Remote, and you can do a finishing slash by actually doing a slash motion with the Wii Remote, and there goes the enemy’s head,” he says. “By holding down the B button and combining that with a motion, you can do a number of cool wrestling moves.”

IGN Details

I loved the old trailer and I also love the new one! The old one was just Cinematography and the new one shows actual in game footage. It looks very interesting to me and I can't wait to see/hear more about this title.
*makes mental note to check out new trailer later on*
I've got a download running and it's slowing everything down, and I'm unwilling to pause it for the 20 mins it would take to load and watch the video. My faster internet connection can't get here fast enough.
WOAH.

That looks sweet. Man he cuts guys right in half. O.o' Big Grin

Yeah, I think that was my favorite part of the trailer. The makers said that this game would be more violent than Man Hunt 2. That move is really cool and violent but it doesn't like nearly as violent as Man Hunt because of the graphics. Don't misunderstand though because I love the graphics and art style of this game and would take it over Man Hunt any day.

Ya I agree with you. The art style is awesome and clearly looks like Killer 7. But man it looks awesome when he cuts them in half! Since this is looking like Killer 7 (except you use a sword) I will most likely be picking this game up!

Most standard attacks are button-mashing?? Hmm.
That probaly means just regular slashs. Special moves will probaly require movements
Looks pretty.. killer.. heh. lame, i know.
I'll be checkin it out.

Anyone have any idea what the deal is with that trio of anime girls shown in so many of the screens for this game? Are they actually characters in the game? Are they from an anime in Japan?
Suda51 creations? From another upcoming game? A No More Heroes minigame? ... its just that they seem out of place..
Although Suda's games can get a little random..
