And as for Sonic appearing without the help of Snake. Don't be so sure. Before Snake's appearance it was a Nintendo exclusive thing to be in a Smash game. And Sonic was a mere fake rumour, but now with Snake appearing the door has opened and the possibility actually exists now.

And I'm much more impressed to see Snake in Brawl than Sonic.

and I think it's partly because, in fact, he DOES stand out... very different from the general SSB theme:
fireball shooting plumber
mythical hero in silly green tunic (AWESOME on him, but come on, it is a LITTLE silly)
space bounty hunter that can turn into a little ball thingy
a fox that leads a group of space fighters
an electrically charged rat
a pink...thing... that eats other things and looks like those things
a little boy with telekinetic powers, and a baseball bat and yo-yo as weapons
two little guys that... climb ice...
and!
a secret operative.... not quite as bizarre as the rest of the group, ya know?
how about instead of goku... CRONO!

There shouldn't be an ULTIMATE CHARACTER per say, unless you are just referring to the final character.
I think the last characters you unlock will be whatever 3rd party characters are included.
