Alright, I have been lucky enough to have played my Wii for about 3 weeks n ow. Now it's time to start looking at what makes it tick. Does anyone know what type of disc the games discs are. For example, Is Wii sports on a DVD or Dual layer DVD or is it something altogether different. I know that Nintendo has indicated that they call them 'Wii disc format'. Does this mean that they have their own disc format....?
u want to see what makes your wii tick?

anyways, i dont have any idea. i just play the games Smile
most likely he wants to look into "backup" copies...my friend said that they use normal CD's with DVD Technology he read...not sure if its true tho?
The Wii discs can either be single or dual layer and are of a proprietary format ... Therefore the disc format is controlled by Nintendo and only the Wii disc bay can read the optical media. I guess a bit like PS2 discs!
why, so u can work on moding and stuff like that?
Eh even if some mod/bootleg market comes about with the Wii I'm not buying into it. I never did with the Dreamcast or PS2, probably the last 2 easiest consoles to get bootleg games for.

There is something about cracking open that fresh plastic and having the box art and booklets and all that other crap in there that even though its useless I dont throw out.

i can understand that, ill wait untill i know people who have done it, and make sure it doesnt totally jack up the wii. and maybe once i get my second wii next year.

You don't have to mod Dreamcast, you know.
Someone will certainly reverse engineer the FS at some point.
It most likely will be done. For those who don't know, I'm an American in Thailand and here piracy runs rampant. Every system has been hacked here and bootlegged games are sold here everywhere, including on the street in broad day light and even in department stores. The XBox360 was cracked within 2 months of arriving. The PS2 here was a lot more successful than the Gamecube even though the Gamecube is so much more fun. The reason being was that the PS2 copies were everywhere and only cost between $1 US or $2.50 at the most. Gamecube took them a lot longer to crack. I'm not saying I support Piracy, just trying to give you guys some idea of what it's like in other places.

I know. I said mod/bootleg. My cousin had a DC and a ton of bootleg games.
But my games remain pure and all in working order along with my DC.

i'm almost positive Wii discs, along with GC discs, are optical disc format which is not used by any other system. also why the Wii doesn't play DVDs. adding the extra components to play them would run the price up alot, so Nintendo cut the concept
I'm not sure what kinda format the GameCube Mini DVDS used by they were bootlegged. I can't think of any system that has come out in the last ten years or so that has not been copied. It's just a matter of time. I just hope nothing bad happens to the Wii and people give it the support it deserves. As long as there is piracy in front of your face, the temptation is too great sometimes. If there were no piracy then companies would have to work much harder to make sure their game stood out more than others to get looked at. Bad both ways you like at it.
ehh, companies get smarter and smarter and find out more ways to stop these modders. But the only thing they do is make it harder, not impossible.
the wii uses 12cm optical discs.
and the gamecube infact does not use mini-discs or mini dvd's as a lot of people call it. They use "nintendo gamecube discs" which hold up to 1.5gb. Nintendo was smart about using these formats in order to prevent bootleged games/mods, but not smart in terms of storage capacity.
yea, but with mistakes comes improvements..i hope, lol
Some points on the Wii Disc

1. Wii Discs are on DVD's. All this means is that the size of the bits (the data on the disc) are grouped in a size and way according to the DVD standard. This cuts cost since blank DVD's and the Lasers to read DVD's are common and easy to source.

2. The data itself is encrypted and unreadable by anything other than a Wii...or at least they are supposed to be. There is also some special data added to the very beginning of the disc to thwart copying and is also used to verify the disc is real and the right region by the Wii. This is common in most every optical disc based video game system and also used, I think, on DVD's, HD-DVD's, and Blu Ray to check the region.

3. The reason why the Wii does not play DVD's is due to the cost associated with licensing the software/hardware for DVD video playback. In Japan next year they will release a special edition Wii that plays DVD's, this again is only for Japan (It will only play Japanese Wii/Cube/DVD's).

4. The source from this came from IGN, Gamespot, and from press releases from Nintendo. I watch the industry very closely (I plan on entering it in the role of associate producer, if I can get the job). Anyways, I also used to go to school here: http://www.digipen.edu and even attended E3 in 2004. So...yeah, that is why I think I'm right on this stuff.

Hope this helps, and if you disagree with me please let me know and show your source, if I'm wrong I do want to learn the correct thing to expand my knowledge base.
o0o0o sounds right. wow good luck with your job, it looks like you know what your talking about
Ok, just to clear up some facts here. The Gamecube games were bootlegged where I am, along with all other games for other consoles. Not sure why some of you are saying that they weren't when they were. Systems that have had their software copied here such as Nintendo Gamecube, XBox, Playstation, Playstation 2, XBox360, All versions of Nintendo handhelds, etc... Just a matter of time, for the 360 it took them 2 months. Once again, I'm not saying I support piracy, just talking about what formats they use and what can or can't be copied.
^If it can be made, it can be made again (IE-> Copied) This is the necessary evil of ever creating anything (referring to manufactured mass quantity goods)
