so I hooked up my component cables today, blah blah blah, decided to try them out with my Game Cube games since I never invested in component cables for my Cube.

I made two discoveries:

1. (I'm sure this is old news to many) I didn't realize that so many games that didn't say "Progressive Scan Compatible" on the back actually are. At first I thought it was just upscaling until I popped in a few more games

at which point:

2. It kinda screws with some games. I haven't had a chance to try all of my Game Cube games yet, but I know that it rendered Lost Kingdoms completely un-playable. My TV showed it went down from 480p to 480i, which I was able to accept. But then all of the colors were... wrong. It seemed like they were crossed--reds became blue, green became yellow, and all sorts of other bizarre color shifts. And even worse, the game was running at about half speed. Not that the framerate went down or anything... it just moved in slow motion. Glad I still have my gamecube

anyway, does anyone know all of the details regarding the Wii, component cables, and GameCube games? does it upscale? what's going on with Lost Kingdoms? and how common is it for games that don't say "Progressive Scan" on the back of the case to be able to run in 480p?

I have a feeling the above post is kind of unclear, so if you need clarification let me know, as I would appreciate accurate answers. Thanks! Smile
aww, come on guys... no help at all? Sad

it doesn't upscale? I guess not... but my other questions?

What's up with Lost Kingdoms being retarded? and are those games that don't say progressive scan on the case actually closet cases? I've noticed they all seem to be first party games, though (Melee, Pikmin, etc.)

hmmm...i really dont know....sorry
Doesn't make a difference, component cables on the Wii don't affect Gamecube games resolution it seems, they're fixed to 576i/480i

From the Manual (Chapter 9, TV Type, page 29 bottom of page in the UK Manual)

Quote:
EDTV/HDTV (480p) does not work with Nintendo Gamecube software. If EDTV/HDTV 480p is selected and you start a Nintendo Gamecube game, the setting will automatically be adjusted to 50Hz (576i) or 60Hz (480i) (depending on the software specifications).

Shame that, was rather hoping for it to run at 480p meself.

The crossing of the colors could be a mess up with the cord. The first GCN component cable I purchased had a defect. I had to have them send a new one. If you believe it to be the cable you should look into another one. They shouldn't affect game speed though. That's just ridiculous.

I own plenty of GCN games and only a few say they run in progressive.. and I can tell you numerous do.. some don't but a decent number of the games I own do utilize progressive scan.. so just give the game a try and find out. I remember in some instances you could hold down the b button as you are booting up the game and it could ask if you want to use progressive scan.
but you're wrong, Fuzzy, because some of them DO run in 480p

Any game that has the little "Progressive Scan" thingy on the box does, as do some others I've found (LIKE SSBM!)

but that still doesn't explain what happened to Lost Kingdoms... I'll try the rest of my games when I have a chance (that's a LOT of games...) and see if any others do that.

actually, the ones that say to hold B are bringing up the prompt on their own. and it shouldn't be a cable issue--it works with everything else... just lost kingdoms is screwed... maybe I should try it with the composite cable and see if it's just a bizarre compatibility issue?

I'm only quoting from the manual that Nintendo supplied with the Wii.

After a quick google it does seem that PAL Gamecube games don't support 480p and US games do. No idea what the problem is with your copy of Lost Kingdom, have other users reported the same problem? If not then it'll more than likely be your hardware or cables.

sorry if I came across like an ass, Fuzzy, I didn't mean toSad sorry. that's lame about PAL games, though

so, I just went and conducted some experiments.

In order to get lost kingdoms running correctly (which, thankfully, I was able to do!) I had to manually set the console to Standard Def (480i) This seems odd, as when it was starting (while running weirdly) the TV showed the signal received was 480i... whatever, it works now.

while we're on the subject, do any gamecube games run in 16:9? I'm just trying to figure out the best settings possible for when I play my GCN games.

gracias
I'm just trying to offer help. Really there is no reason for any of that to be happening.. and the b-thing is just the b-thing. Just spreading the knowledge.

I will say, though, the b-thing doesn't seem to be an issue--it auto-prompts for 480p which is cool (I never would have figured out some games were progressive compatible!)

Heh, it's oki, wasn't established that we were on about separate zones anyhow. Yea, sucks about PAL, nowt I can do about that though so it's time to be happy that they play at all.

Indeedy they can, Res Evil 4 I know for a fact does, GameCube games tend to have the option in the option/settings menus. Now I don't know if the Wii setting of 16:9 automatically forces GameCube games to 16:9 (didn't spot anything in the manual to the contrary) but it's always worth cycling through them to find out. I don't know any repositories for GameCube games that support widescreen but it really wouldn't surprise me if someone made one.
