Since Nintendo won't be selling any memory cards that they've made themselves, I can see no reason for them not to support an external HDD in the future. Let's just hope they think of it soon

what do you mean by nintendo making them?
any sd card by any company will work.
..wait, you didn't pay out the ass and get ripped off, did you? :P
What I'm trying to say is that since Nintendo don't make their own storage devices, there's no point for them not to implement the use of external HDDs. The Wii does have USB-ports, right? I didn't get one in the first batch

maybe I missed the tech boat here, but what's the point of using your Wii to watch movies? I have a DVD player, no need to convert everything to an SD card and use the Wii... and I'll just watch downloaded crap on my computer monitor, thank you very much! I don't even really see the point of the photo channel. I will grant, though, being able to send pics via the message board IS pretty cool...
instead of an sd card, you can use an external hard drive. look in the news arcive for more info

pretty sure that was either false or fixed via firmware, though I believe the former more than the latter...
and that still doesn't answer my question

Well, I for one am looking forward to the photo channel. Here is the application I'm using:
I am finishing up my semester of study abroad here in Hong Kong, and I have many pictures (from here, Vietnam, Mainland China, etc.). I also have relatives who want to see my pictures as I will be traveling to their homes, but they don't have computers and my laptops screen is not very good for showing something to 8-10 people at a time so....
I will be using my Wii to show everyone the places I went and talk about my travels to my family. None of them have ever been to Asia before, so this will be interesting for them I hope.
I also got a cool CD of traditional Chinese music in Beijing which I will use for background music....
*I just hope my 2 GB SD card is big enough...I went photo crazy
---OK, off topic again kinda.....but just saying that for some people, the inclusion of the photo channel is good. I also have video...but I won't be able to play that since the conversion and editing would take me too long to finish and I don't care that much right now about that. hehe.
Right now I'm using a modded Xbox to show my downloaded media and it's great. Watching something from your couch always feels better than sitting in this crappy office chair I'm using for my computer (I'm sitting in that chair, not the computer).
Even though this solution works pretty damn good, it'd be a whole lot better to have an SD-function as well for when my mates bring stuff over. Now if there only was a way to skip the conversion...
all the clips on the video can all be found easily online already in quicktime format, the widescreen vid in the middle was straight off apples quicktime movie previews,
it's all a hoax, divx don't work, and neither does the external hard drives, YET.
Question....
My Wii play's .avi vids.
I thinked it only can play .mov vids oO
Did I just missed the info for this or is it something special? ^^'
I am wondering can you just use larger SD cards than 2g?

No, not at the moment. I believe the limit is 2GB. I hope this will increase in the future but you never know.
