so for x-mas, my roommate got me the "Wi-Fi Max for PSP & DS (Perfect for Wii)" it basically connects to your computer and provides a small hotspot. you know the deal.
my question is: is January when i move for college, i've already been told that the whole town, border to border, is setup for wireless internet access (since Arizona State U. and Collin's College are both in the area). will i still need the WiFi Max still in college or will the provided wireless internet be enough? i don't know if it's broadband or wifi or whatever in the town though.
I would think that wireless would be enough, and if for some reason you cannot get it to work you will still have your WiFi adapter.
possibly, but the college is 7 hours away from Albuquerque. i don't wanna get out there, not need it then be stuck with the adaptor
only thing i can think of is that the wireless isn't necessarily a wifi signal, so i would still need the adaptor, but could use it anywhere with my laptop since it's always connected to the internet long as i'm in the city limits
I would take it just to be on the safe side because even if the Uni has Wireless everywhere, they may put up certain restrictions and accessibility to it. Better safe than sorry.
but what am i to do with the adaptor if i don't need it? drive the 7 hours to return it?
I don't understand. Perhaps I read something wrong, sorry about that. I thought you meant that you owned it and were trying to decide if you should take it or not. If that's the case and you do own it then it would be better to have it just in case, not sure what you mean by taking it back. If possible try asking someone who is already at the uni about the net setup there if you know someone.
well, technically i do own it. roommate bought it for me for christmas present. i haven't opened it yet though. i didn't buy one earlier because i wasn't sure if i would need it when i moved. i now have it, but still don't know if i'll need it.
if i take it and don't need it, it'll still be unopened, so i could return it, but i'd have to come all the way back to Albuquerque to return it
Ah, I see the problem now. Hmmm, that's a toughie. That's one of those xxxxxx if you do, xxxxxx if you don't kinda situations. It it works without it, u took it for no reason and can't return it, and if you don't take it and need it... Well, I wish you the best of luck in that decision.
thx. can i get a 2nd opinion? i'm sure there's another college student with wireless in the area who knows if the DS and Wii can run off that or if i'd still need the adaptor
if they have a wireless signal around the city, its going to be WiFi. thats what every palm pilot, laptop, and any other wireless online device uses. i think you will be ok. the only thing you might need to do, is they might have restrictions, but you could probably call up the city and get the info you need to get it working. that is what it is there for isnt it?
My cousin can use wireless fine for most stuff, problem is with WEP Keys on the internet, might not work with Wii, I would go ahead and take the Wifi Adapter, because you may need it for another day anyways.
WEP keys will work as long as you know the key. I know WPA works with mine and i believe there was an option for WEP. So if you know the key you should be good.
yes there is an option for WEP keys on the wii, im currently useing MAC filtering (because of my 2 tivos, but now they can use WEP keys also), but am gonna switch to WEP encryption now instead.
You should be able to use both MAC filtering and WEP.
WEP? WPA? how bout WTF? i have no idea what was said in the last 5 posts. so there's some kind of lock on the wireless internet and i need a key to be able to use it? and this key may not let me use the wireless for my Wii or DS? but having the adaptor could bypass that?
I say take it. I know with my college, we have wireless internet (WiFi, mostly) accessible to all students at every place...except the dorms. And our school has a policy against wireless routers because then people aren't paying to use internet services, and they've caught each of my friends routers and confiscated them. So...my Nintendo Wi-Fi connector came in real handy.
how do they block the wifi signal to the one building? lead paint?
it's not that they block the wi-fi signal, it's just that there's interference from something, so it's very unreliable in all the dorm buildings. we can pick it up every once in a while, but the signal is very low, and goes in and out randomly. everywhere else on campus, though, it works fine.
how stupid. if they let you use the wifi on the rest of the campus, why not the dorm? anywho though.
i'm thinking i'll just end up keeping it. if i end up not needing it, then i've already got my brother's birthday present. YAY for re-gifting
