Isn't it funny? Nintendo compairs the size of the Wii to something it can't even use. Three DVD cases stacked on top of each other. Well, it'd sure be convenient if we could use what's inside those cases on the Wii, which leads me to think of the following:
WiiVD's. (Gosh, I never get tired of playing off that word.

)
When do you think it'll happen, if it ever does? I mean, the Wii playing DVD's so far is impossible. Heck, it won't even play music discs. (Even my PS1 does that!) However, I am almost 100% sure that the Wii will eventually become DVD/CD compadable. How and when is what I'm not sure.
Will you be able to just stick the DVD in and play it, or will you have to buy a separate disc drive that plugs into the USB port in the back for who knows how much?
If you can put it directly into the Wii, will it be made possible by a future system update?
Will you have to buy special DVD's to put in the Wii (WiiVDs), just like the PSP?
WILL it ever happen anyway?
Now, I remember hearing on some website (I can't remember which, maybe IGN) that you will buy a separate disc drive that plugs into the USB, so that's my guess, although I would like it to simply update and, poof, it works.
So, what do you think'll happen?
Just like with a lot of hardware on the market, Nintendo might be able to do a firmware update and allow DVD/CD compatibility. When you get into those arenas though, you have to pay royalties. Philips gets royalties on CD, and I'm not sure who gets them on DVD.
Why do you want your Wii to play a DVD or music CDs anyway? It's a big "who cares?" IMO. I've got a DVD player. It plays DVD. I don't worry about whether it will later play video games.
Nintendo's model is to focus on games, though there are rumors that they will sell Wiis that play DVDs in Japan in 2007. Sony and Microsoft are focusing on building do-everything entertainment centers. These are different products with different capabilities.
If you must know, Mr. WiiHammer, why I would enjoy such a feature, it is because the television I use does not have a DVD player built in, nor does it have multiple A/V input plug-ins. Since it is a hastle to repeditiously plug and unplug cords just to change device, I think it would come in handy to have a console that allowed me to play my games and watch my movies with no hastle.
So, in short, I care.
royalties for DVD's are paid to SONY.

Get a receiver?

or get a new tv. i got this gadget awhile ago that's like a port and you can plug three separate av input plugins and switch depending on which you want. it only cause me 3 dollars...but i didn't get it here in the states.

thats called a switch, and yes thats what you should get, it would cost about 15 bucks from target. also as stated earlier a dvd ready wii will be released in japan next year but not anywhere else, atleast for now, which means not atleast untill 08'. also it seems HIGHLY unlikely to me that they could have a firmware update that makes dvd's readable. it is more likely a lack of hardware that keeps it from reading DVD's. lastly i do wish that they would have a firmware update to make your music from an SD card more easily playable... ok im done ill step of my pedistal, lol.
Get a modded xbox and you'll never have another media worry again

Lol, no they're not, if any royalties are payed they'll go to the DVD Consortium.
However, I think the DVD spec is an open format and therefore the only "royalties" you'd have to pay is to CSS for content scrambling and Macrovision for, well, macrovision (Both copy-protection systems).
Some still may go to philips because the format is derrived from the compact disk, but I'm unsure.

Couldn't have said it better. I hope Nintendo sticks to the focus they have now and let the other guys worry about attempting to replace the computer. Dang, as I typed that I just thought of my wife using the wii to check the weather this morning. Okay, Nintendo can integrate stuff, just so long as they don't integrate too much and they keep it simple.
nice brainstorming, but...
NO. LET'S LOOK BACK at a shitty thing called umd video for psp. BAD IDEA.
that is, if you meand wiivd's are a new disc other than normal dvd movies you buy.
THERE IS NO REASON WHY NINTENDO CAN'T PUT THE DVD OR CD COMPATABILITY IN. ALL IT TAKES IS JUST A SOFTWARE UPGRADE.
As long as it doesn't cost me anything I'm alright with it. I don't need, nor want my Wii to play DVDs, CDs, VHS cassettes, radio stations, make waffles, take phone calls, shine my shoes, or any other add-on you can think of.
B- Bu- B- B- But waffles... ='[
Royalties on DVD are NOT paid to Sony. They are paid to Toshiba.

I think waffles are cool... and muffins.
I dunno, it would be cool to see DVDs on the Wii, but I could live without it. If it were to happen, I'd use it. If not, I'm not gonna complain.
Current position on the issue----> "Meh"
I also agree with the waffle comment. With Wii Connect 24...I see no reason why the "Wiifle" attachment couldn't make waffles for me in the morning, so when I awaken I have a nice couple there. Integrate it to make blueberry waffles....then I will marry my Wii

Well, most of you are like: "Oh, but if we make the Wii DVD compadible, then we'll fall to the ranks of Microsoft and Sony, and no one wants to be them right now.. *CoughespeciallySonycough*"
Well that's not the case! Sony and Microsoft are worse because they have lame advertising and the innovation of a Dragonball Z game! (That's not a compliment.) See, I post this, and instead of people saying "It's a possiblility" or "Sounds like it could happen", it's "Buy a new TV" and "Who cares? i JuSt wUnT m3h wIi m4n" You guys are soul-sucking pessimists who could kill a cow with your apathy alone.. (But I loves ya' anyway. XD)
P.S. Also, if you wish to marry your Wii, I suggest you go to international waters.

WHAT?!?! wii makes waffles? screw DVDs....I want waffles. how about a george forman GRwiiLL!
