it just so happens that we got and alien tv today. it is standard definition, it's the EXACT same size as the old one, but flat screened crt. for some reason, it also has component input, but no hd. so my question is, can the wii do 480i-NOT 480p(no support whatsoever)- without the ability to progressively scan through a component cable?

Many SDTVs actually will do 480p. It's very likely that your TV will support 480p. The problem is, it's technically not allowed to be called HDTV or HD Ready, unless it supports 720p/1080i.

Yeah so your TV and cables should work just fine.
the t.v. DOES NOT DO PROGRESSIVE SCAN. 480I IS MAXIMUM SUPPORTED MODE.
i already tried to change from 480i to 480p with a dvd/vhs combo player on component cabling. it went from a flickering half screen to completely blacking out.
the manual even states that the component input is capable of up to 480i.

..unless there is something i didn't notice?
Some TVs do support a 240p mode as well... In fact, all SDTVs do. Anyway, it's probably there because component input offers slightly better quality than composite. However, I think the Wii automatically does 480p when component cables are connected.
is there anyone technically minded that could check if you can switch between progressive and interlaced on component?
How do you mean? If you've got a component cable plugged in you're using progressive.
NOT ALWAYS TRUE. as stated earlier, my crazy sdtv has a component input that can do a MAXIMUM of 480i. :/
and my dvd/vhs combo lets you switch to progressive scan as an option, which does not work.
with the component cable plugged intot he Wii u ahve to go intot he screen settings and there you can change it from 480i or 480p. the first time the calbes r plugged in u r running in your old mode (480i) until you select 480p. So yes the component cables can do 480i
Big Al, you've got the same problem that I have. Your TV supports the Component Cables but does not have progressive scan. When you plug in your component cable to the TV you can view the Wii games in 480i only, not in 480p unless your t.v. supports it. If you try to do so and your t.v. does not support it then you'll get a big black line down the center of your screen and your screen will be split into halves.

I see that your DVD does support progressive scan as does mine but the problem is even if the DVD player supports it, the t.v. still does not support it so it won't matter if you plug it into your DVD first. I hope that this helps.
I'm not exactly sure what the question is, but from what I understand, you want to know if the Wii can be set to 480i when using component cables. The answer is yes, as answered by DreamWalker above. Unless you select 480p on the options menu, you are in 480i mode, even with the components.
I'm running the component cables, and have my Wii set to 480p. Yet, when I play Trauma Center, or Rapala (two games which do not output to 480p) the Wii automatically downgrades to 480i.

Is this my imagination, or is there any truth behind this? The only reason I say this is when I have my Wii on 480p, and I start a game of Rapala, my TV's 'source' messages pops up in the upper left corner, and the screen does it's normal 'output resolution change' dance.
that helped alot. thanks, people!

right now, we just watch dvd's with component at 480i. but instead of wasting money, standard red, white, and yellow cables work perfectly in the component input spots . Wink
