Hello,
Does the Wii currently have the correct hardware inside to be able to play DVD's if a software update was provided over wiiconnect24?.

Thanks

Neil
I believe so. The hardware side of the Wii will support DVD's as I think Wii games are in DVD format. The only problem right now is that there is no DVD encoding software on there. This can be fixed by an update. Although, I think it may be pushed in Wii Ware rather than WiiConnect24.
Cheers. Thats what I need to know. I hope a Wii Software DVD player channle is released in the future. I would download it even if it was 500 points like the browser will be in June.
I can see where DVD playback would be cool for people who don't have a DVD player now, but I wouldn't give up my upconverting player for 480p and I wouldn't give up Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS for Dolby Prologic.
They are releasing a new Wii this year in Japan that plays DVDs. But honestly, who even cares?

I have like 3 DVD players and a couple of portable ones. My Wii doesn't need to be able to play them.
My point exactly. This would be perfect for kids/students who are low on space, or just don't want to have all the stuff everywhere.

My DVD player is good enough as it is, plus, Ill be getting a PS3 for Blu-Ray anywho.
I have an XBOX for DVD Playback, but I would like to have a Wii do the same thing, because it would be easier and more convenient to be able to move it to the living room.
hehe, I gave up on DVDs ages ago, I have a server and 3TB* of space filled** with (Legal) DVDrips ^_^

And my iPod can take about 200 Hours of MP4 if need be so no need for an In-Car DVD player either XP

* 6x 500GB SATA 3GB/s RAID 0

** Well According to my computer 1.2TB have been used >_<
Wow, my friend has a 4TB Hard Drive.
=P
Ah yes, I keep forgetting we're in TB now lol.

But point being, DVD isn't needed in the Wii. It'd cause them to raise the price.
