It has FFT-like side missions which make you wanna complete every single one.
Other than that, experience is thrown out the window with XII. The only advantage you have is knowing elemental weaknesses, but you can get that from Pokemon. The battle system is also addictive so you might often run into unnecessary fights just for the sake of it... unless you're getting owned.

With FF games I have a bad habit of overtraining.
