The console scene group Ninja plans to release the Wiinja, the world's first Nintendo Wii modchip, by February 1. With the chip installed, which only requires you to solder five wires, you'll be able to play backup copies of Wii games on your console. (Downloadable Wii ISOs already litter the Internet.) One reason why we believe that this could be the Real Deal is that Ninja already makes shady accessories for the Nintendo DS.
Should the Wiinja actually come out, it'd make the Wii the second of the three next-gen systems able to play backup games, after the Xbox 360. We eagerly await a review unit. For purely fair use backup purposes, of course.

nice, does it do much more?
Updated

Seems like a start

What I want is a mod chip that allows you to mess with the BIOS settings on the actual Wii ICs, such as the graphics chip for instance

I dont get it, what does it do. Im srsly, clueless.
I wonder how these guys do it, does anyone know the pinouts for the ICs used in the Wii?
I'm with Cloud, I don't get it! What does it do. :S
it plays backup copies of games.
"intended use"--so you can back up games
actual use--so you can play burned/pirated/otherwise cheaper or free games
...but I didn't say that... *cough*

Thats the thing I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THAT!
then you don't need one then

wonder if wii connect can detect the chip, i would hate to upset the Big N
it can't be hard to send ot an update through WC24 to detect a foreign mod and disable the system until it's removed
that would be humorous. take THAT friggin' hackers
According to the specs this one is stealth even when active, so this one would be tricky to spot on a software level
Well, I'm not opening my Wii to do something that I could mess up on....yea.
me neither...now i would mod the heck out of a xbox
Here's another mod chip by Teamcyclops
While we're still speculating on whether Team Ninja's modchip for the Wii is the real deal, in comes this news bit on something equally interesting. Teamcyclops has just announced the upcoming release of its very own mod chip which, much like its Wiinja counterpart, allows the console to play GameCube and Wii backups.
As for the other details surrounding this chip:
Quicksolder (no wires required)
Plays Wii Backups
Plays GC Backups
Play GC Homebrew
Play GC Imports (swap needed)
Built-in Audiofix (GC games using streaming are working flawlessly, no patch needed)
DVD-R / DVD+R support
Optional chip disable wire
Stealth even when chip is enabled
Multi-purpose LED
Further reports say that this chip may be shipping in by next week, though there has not been any news on a set price. The team's site isn't up yet though, so we're going to have to file this under rumor for now. We advise the hopefuls to keep track of this development in case any further news turns up. For now, take you pick on similar announcements in the past...
Team Cyclops announces its Wii modchip - QJ.Net
Hey guys I follow the scene pretty close. Ill tell you right now you dont wont either of these two new mod chips. For one they arnt region free breakers (cant play import games). For two they are the first series chips from my exp. its allways better to wait till all the reviews and more chips to compare. They are also pretty much clones of each other. one just soders to the board w.out wires, which is probably worse. Oh and to answer the Q of nintendo breaking your mod chip or some kinda protection is no on these chips not cause of "stealthing" but because they mod your dvdrom not your f/w on the mobo. least from what i understand.
cheers! ^_^
