Sony, the builder of world's most powerful gaming console, the Playstation 3, apparently is as of late taking on a condescending tone towards the apparently more successful Nintendo Wii.
"Wii could be considered an impulse buy more that anything else," said Dave Karraker, a spokesman for Sony Computer entertainment of America, "but we believe the PS3 will be the console to attract hardcore, committed gamers, while Wii will do little beyond satisfying new and casual players."
It's common knowledge the Playstation 3 is significantly more powerful than the "tiny" Wii. However, Nintendo has proved [marketing] brains prevail over [hardware] brawn.
"Nintendo came at things sideways - they made stuff that's silly and fun," said Jeff Gerstmann, senior editor of GameSpot, quoted by NYP.
"It has created a new style of gaming."
In that way Karraker is right saying "the Wii did not belong in the same category as the more powerful PlayStation 3". That's exactly the Wii's advantage. Perrin Kaplan, vice president for marketing at Nintendo of America, said the Wii was aimed at changing the perception of what kinds of games adults like to play. The console, she said, "has turned it all upside down."
"That's absolutely inaccurate," she said to Sony's allegation that the Wii only appeared to be in higher demand because there had been fewer shipments of it.
GameSpot estimates some 76 game releases for the Wii in 2007, compared with 127 for PlayStation 3.
Because of the huge success registered on the market with its tiny console, Nintendo decided to increase the monthly production to at least 1 million units, in order to satisfy strong demand. Sony's Dave Karraker started off by stating 100,000 PS3s are shipping each week in the US, and are selling out.
While reporting its fiscal performance of the past quarter, the AP reports Nintendo shared that it met its original forecast of shipping 4 million units by the end of 2006, and that it still intends to have 7 million manufactured by the end of this fiscal year, which ends on March 31st.
In order to meet such a forecast, Nintendo says it's increasing production capacity to over a million Wii consoles per month. At such a pace, by the end of this year, over 18 million consoles would be produced. To give scale to such a figure, the Nintendo Gamecube sold 22 million units over the course of six years. Clearly, Nintendo's aggressive pacing shows they expect better success with their latest console.
John Pospisil of Tech.Blorge assesses correctly Karraker's comments when he writes, "To me it sounds like a PR hack trying to put a positive spin on a situation, which is anything but positive for Sony. I guess that's what he's paid to do."
Not to mention, it's quite impolite to condescendingly label all Nintendo Wii buyers as "impulse buyers," who, more or less, aren't capable of appreciating the much more powerful Playstation 3. Snatching the most powerful console ever would seem more like an impulse buy to me. I think Sony's comments, all in all, will have a negative impact on the company.

WHERE THE HELL IS THE PLAYSTATION 3 EVEN THINKING OF GETTING THAT MANY GAMES IN LESS THAN A YEAR?!?!?!??

is it even possible, or are some games already made, with what third party support is left? explain please.

could he put it any better?

Its not quite impossible to get 120ish games out in a year.

Sony after all is known for getting piles and piles of games. Of course, we know that out of those 120ish games there'll be about 15 that will be worth paying money to purchase.
seriously, the decision to make a game ,make it then sell it can actually take less than a year? this is the ps3 we're talking about. you know, better graphics, and all that. those games must be crap.
Ya you can make in a game in a year, they just have special a classification: CRAP.
one of the recent PC magazine had a comparison regarding the next gen systems. referring back to the ps2 and gamecube, there were 8000+ games for ps2 and 550+ for gamecube. gamecube plunger to it's horrible death due lack of games. so if making lots of games can help bring the success, sony will no doubt making a run for it. i was reading another forum, and sony is considering lowering the price of ps3 because the high price is not as welcomed by the gaming market. however, there is no tell on how much of a price drop and when will it occur.
by the way, i don't think making lots of games make it classify as CRAP. there are lots of FF series, not many make the CRAP list. there are lots of mario series, not many make the CRAP list. the list go on and on... take mario kart for example, they release a version of it from handheld to next-gen. pokemon has two different colors for the same version game...differ by a whopping 10+ collectible monsters. it's just making money...if you make a game, someone's gonna buy it. it doesn't matter if it's a multi million dollar franchise game like zelda, or a tv series game like 24 or the shield. you make it, someone will buy it and you'll make that little bit of money. so having 8000 "CRAP" games to pick from is by odds better than 500 "CRAP" games.
i don't mean they're crap if a lot are made. now a lot of games IN A SHORT TIME, like less than a year as in this case, well, that might be a different story...

I like how "CRAP" was capitalized every time. Toungue

I really don't know where all these games are coming from but I'll bet a good majority of those games won't be worth playing. Every console gets them. Happy Feet, Ant Bully, the Looney Tunes are just a few that Wii has/is getting.

Hit the nail right on the head. I know a couple people who are looking to get the PS3 just because they hear it's the most powerful. They know nothing about the games, the price, or the competition.

nicely put.
IGN had an article a few weeks/months back, compairing close to a dozen games between the 360 and the PS3. Guess what? Not one game looked better on the PS3. In fact, a few actually looked worse.
XB360 = out for a year.

PS3 = out for a couple of months.

Developers = had more time to play with XB360's hardware.

Of course, Sony are just being immature with how they are handling the PS3's had publicity lately. But I guess they are just looking out for their company. I mean I'm sure Nintendo was saying similar things when the GCN was out and sucking.
people are forgetting these companies are trying their best to make games for the fans. it doesn't matter if it's the 360 or ps3 or wii, the common interest is the gamers. 360 is shooting for the greater online service for the online community. wii is creating the new gaming experience for people that wants something new. ps3 is taking a step up towards better picture quality and great title games. there is a cup of tea for everyone, a huge pie for those who wants a piece. if you don't want to play online, don't buy a 360. don't want to shell out 600 dollars, don't pay for ps3. don't want a system that is lacking future technoloies, don't buy a wii.
If only the world could be as wise as you.

But sadly, the existence of fanboys prevents that.

And were did I stat that I was talking about FF and Mario huh?, plus I didn't say making tons of games either, I said making a game in a year.

Frankly there are many games like mario and FF but the fact is those weren't rushed out in a year, there's lots of other games that do qualify as CRAP, and frankly I didn't say all of these "8000" mention games were CRAP. There's quite a large amount that is though. When I go to my local video store they have tons of games for the PS2 there and perhaps maybe 10-15% of them are worth even just renting.

Also remember I said when you rush a game out in a year it's most likely going to be CRAP and that I didn't state that tons of games are classified as such, but sadly with tons of games there usually is a large amount of CRAP.

Wise you are, yes. You should never want to dish out 600$ for a system though since the 360 and PS3 are so alike, just get a Wii60 combo. It's a so nice. SOOO NICE! Big Grin

and once again, i come to the conclusion that you need to tell these tenacious fanboy peoples that the company they vigorously support do not really care about them, like, ever.

since i have spent close to a grand on nintendo products in the last couple months...think they will shovel my sidewalk for me... its cold out
Nah, never happen but I like you way of putting it. You're absolutely right, don't start believing that all these game makers or console makers care about you on a personal level. They care if you want to buy their product, games, or accessories.

Let's look at the classic fast food situation. If you go in to order there's a better chance that the food you get will be a bit better than if you went through the drive-thru where they know you'll probably not come back for something small.
