Full Version: Virtual Console Prices on the Rise?

I found this article by Brian Szabelski who claims that Virtual console games will get a price raise here and there.

In the beginning there was no change in the prices of the games but then  some games became more expensive. In Japan A Link to the Past and Sim City cost 900 points while North America they are at 800. Also, Ocarina of Time would normally be priced at 1000 points since it was a N64 game, but because of it's "greatness" it will cost the rabid Zelda fans 1200 points to download it, a trend that could contine with all highly popular games.

The licensing costs and rights for certain games could push their prices up as well. Reggie once mentioned that it would cost Nintendo too much to bring some Rare games to the Virtual Console which means they would need to compensate by jacking up the prices.

If this keepsup Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario RP3 will be raised by about 200-300 points. This may make some fans, who may be close to spending hundreds of dollars on Wii point cards, very angry and could cause them to continue emulating games on their PCs.

If the prices keep going up I'm going to be really mad. I doubt I will be getting many more Virtual Console games if I wind up needing to buy two because of the game prices. What do you think?

If anything the damn prices need to drop.
I was gonna get those games too, i say this calls for a boycott!
Nintendo is already making enough money, and who is going to say no to OOT?
Me.

ditto.

I think it's a bit much as well. These are games that most of us have played or own already but are still willing to pay for them again to keep it all together. However, raising the prices of games we already have played or owned is just wrong.

I know the VC is doing well but this may lead the trend the other way. I mean you're paying for games that you can emulate for free. They don't have any added value at all and this way of thinking by Nintendo may just make some people wait for an emulator exploit or make them simply download onto their PCs.

I used to play Magic Online so I know how it feels to pay real money for something you don't have or that doesn't actually belong to you. Not such a good feeling and I quit because I wasted way too much money on it.
Exactly, its not very smart.

And as for charging more for good VC games... why? I mean, those who already have it aren't going to pay more for the same game (unless they have lots of cash to spare... or are really desperate to have ANOTHER copy of it)

This is why I have very little interest in the VC. As an old school gamer I own most of the games already. Of course I'll get a few of them for novelty sake, but I really think the deathblow to my VC interest was the stupid region locking.

Stupidest. VC. Move. Ever. Nintendo.

Smarten up.
While the idea of the VC is great, and im not against it in anyway... but if its going to cost me 1200 points to download OoT... ill just set up my N64 and play it
I'm not against the VC either.

Just the stupid region locking.
Maybe we need to start an online petition to Nintendo to keep VC game prices down. I can see where certain games might cost more to license and such, but Nintendo is making so much off of the 95% of the other VC games being sold.
Luckily i already have OOT on the Masters Quest disc for GameCube. I won't be boycotting the VC, as I think its great, but I will be disappointed if game prices start rising.
While we would like to think that the VC is aimed at us, the hardcore gamers that still have our old systems, own all of these games, and can easily emulate these on our PCs, the truth is not so.

The VC system is a great way for users to download classic game that they missed (because they were not "into" games) or download old favorites that they have since lost. As Nintendo said, the prices may have to be raised on certain games in order to cover the royalties on those games. The other option is to just not offer them. I know if I had to choose, I'd pick for the game to be available, even at a relatively high price, rather than not at all. Even if I decide not to purchase it, at least it's still there.
I personally have mixed feelings on this topic, but here's my opinion/rant anyhow.

Being a relatively non-core gamer for the N46 back in 'the day', I've missed out on some of the games that I would have wanted to play such as Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Super Smash Bros., and many others. And being one that has has his games stolen, would want his personal hardcore favorites. Being a Mario Tennis freak, I loved to play against and with my sister, and I wish I had those days back. I'm crossing my fingers for Mario Tennis for the Virtual Console.

Even though I do not have a Wii (yet), I still feel that Nintendo is offering many people an opportunity to get their favorites and missed games. This service isn't an online auction(Ebay). You're purchasing the games(for N64) from where you would have ten years ago. From a service that has received their games from Nintendo. So it would make sense that this wouldn't be cheap.

(Good enough?)
The thing about the VC is, the games that I really hoped would be available to me are ones that I never saw in Australia. It would be a good way for Nintendo of Australia to expose our country to some of them (ie. Super Mario RPG and Fire Emblem 1-5) but due to this region locking... it doesn't look likely.

It saddens me, because I'm forced to take alternate methods to play these games that never reached Australian shores.

Sorry Nintendo, you've left me no choice.
I dont think it really said the prices our up excatly, most that the really good games everyone wants will be costing more.. ( did I make that sound worse..)
Not really, if Nintendo know they can milk money from something thats popular... then they'll do it.

Like meBig Grin I missed out on owning Starfox 64, OoT, MM and I want DK64 again cuz it's still the best game in the series even though it might take a while to come.

I missed out on owning a N64..
I actually think DKC is the best DK game >_>

Then again, I hate DK64's stupid rap song theme... it made me hate the game lol, that and the new Kongs weren't as cool as just Donkey, Diddy and Dixie.
