A speaker, yes; a mic, no.
In a disappointing interview with EGM, Shigeru Miyamoto responded to the ideas of many Wii fans on extra peripheals on the Wii controller. Unfortunately, not in the way Wii fans had hoped.
Miyamoto was asked about the speaker in the controller. It will be used for sounds in addition to the rumble. The idea for the speaker was one of many ideas tested for the Wii Controller. Others included what gamers anticipated, cameras and microphones. Unfortunately, this was the only one to get past the debating stages.
When asked why there was not going to be speakers or cameras, Miyamoto brought up cost and technology. He also continued to explain that the easiest microphone to use for home consoles would be a headset. If a headset was to be attached to the controller, Miyamoto said, "it gets complicated to use". Miyamoto wished that everything about the Wii would be fun and simple to use. No further information was given on the camera.

I never thought about it being in the controller... it's a good thing I didn't get my hopes up about it then. In keeping the system as cheap as possible though, both of those peripherals would most likely come seperate. Wireless headsets and decent digital video cams don't come cheap.
this makes me feel sadder than when i go to electronic stores here in Japan and ask for a ds lite and they say sold out
that sucks!
consider the reasons:
not every game will use speech or a camera capability, so why include it in the base remote? We all have seen the DS technology get abused in pointless touch screen interfacing, since developers all the sudden feel they need to use it. Lately though so many games have not used the feature, and to what end? A better game experience. The Dual Screen use, really is the only necessary part of the technology that needs to be in place. I cant really play a GBA game anymore, because of the one screen function. I love having my map, HUD, or other information displayed all the time. It is just so much more helpful. But games dont need touch screen, or even voice recognition, and many games dont use either or both of these. Maybe Nintendo thought that the only games that will use voice will be Mario Party, and packing the extra headset might just be better.
We will see...
It's true not none of the gmes at the moment would have been developed with these additions so even if it did work it would be an add on.
well there mit not be a cam but there is a mic, just use the head set

No, as Miyamoto said, there will be no headset...
He never said there would be no headset, just no mic in the controller.

Well, obviously there are questions of cost and technology. When you think about the type of microphone that would be easy for people to use for home play you think of a headset. And so the issue is, if you have a headset somehow attached to the controller, it gets complicated to use, and we wanted [everything to] be easy to use-simple and fun.
Wiimote uses bluetooth to interface with the Wii. There are already bluetooth headsets available for cellphones and computers. Nintendo just has to develop one for the wii and thats that.

As much as I'd love this to happen, I'm doubting it will come true.
I know there is what he says, but you have to look at what he's not saying too.
He neer said no he just said all the downfall to make you psychologically think that he thinks it wont happen but actualy the fact it was even mentioned means it might happen.
I cant wait for the *fake* pictures of the Wii headset to be online.
...cant wait...
Well there may not be one built in but I still think they have something up their sleeve in the way of a mic (however they implement it) - dont forget - nintendo registered wiikaraoke.com

They probaly will have a headset, because they are making one for DS ( goes in the rectangle hole beside headphone slot!!
why would u need a head set for a handheld. isn't that a little much?
im not that sad though this is not one of my top proioritys for the wiimote

Useful during online games, and project rub ^_^ you look weird when you are blowing into the mic on the bus ^_^"
