Gunstar Heroes
For the Sega Genesis
Played through the Nintendo Wii

Explosions everywhere! Look out another enemy! Oh no there’s ten more guys coming from the left! Hurry pick up that new weapon! Just some of the things you’ll scream while playing Gunstar heroes on your Wii.

You find yourself on the Gunstar 9 planet, which had been a peaceful planet for many years, until an evil Dictator, Colonel Red, kidnapped Gunstar twins’ older brother and used mind control to make him his slave.

Gunstar Heroes story is pretty diverse for a game its age. The story starts out were you have four different levels that you can play at any time as after you beat each you get a jewel that had been stolen from you. Once you have all four a series of events will unfold and you’ll have to play through quite a few more levels that unravel the story even more.

The story is well done and is thoroughly enjoyed while playing; it brings you to tons of awesome locations from battleships to forests. I definitely think Sega did a good job story wise.

This game is visual impressive; it’s probably one of the best looking 2d shooters of it’s time. It has beautiful backgrounds and levels. One of my personal favorites is the Native level; it has some really nice backgrounds and a really good looking level design.

One thing that really stands out in this game is its explosions and bosses. The explosions which happen every few seconds are incredibly detailed and awesome. There’s not a lot more things that are as satisfying as seeing that explosion after killing an enemy. The bosses are also incredibly well done, most are in between 2D and 3D which gives off a really cool effect and adds to its visual beauty.

When you first open his game you look at the missions and your first thought is; only 4 missions? What! But you soon figure out that once you’ve beaten those 4 levels you’ve got quite a lot more levels to play through after that. Not to mention each level is quite long and will take quite the effort to complete.

The gameplay is incredible! There are more then 20 characters on the screen at once and you’ve got your trusty gun to blast through them. Speaking of guns you have an arsenal of 4 different kinds of guns which can be equipped with another type of weapon which will create a custom weapon. The four weapons are; the machine gun, this is a normal gun that shoots out small balls; the chaser, this gun’s shots follow your enemies; there is fire which is perfect for close combat, it’s basically a flame thrower; and last but not least lightning, this gun will shoot through your enemies so that you can hit more then one enemy without shooting multiple shots.

Gunstar Heroes revives some of the awesome music of the 16-bit era. The music sounds incredible considering the time it was made in. You’ll never be distracted while playing as the music sucks you right into the heat of the combat as you’re blasting your way through hoards of enemies.

The sounds in the game are good too, from explosions all the way down to your gun firing. I think they did a very good job on the sound of the explosions as it sounded very real. The same goes for the sounds that the guns make, it sounds good and changes with the different weapons you are using. All around the sound is great as well as the music.

Gunstar Heroes is worth a lot more then the meager 8$ you’ll pay to get it. There’s a lot of replay value as the levels never get old as you can always pick which levels you want to play. Not to mention there’s an awesome co-op mode that is virtually flawless another then the fact that you may ‘accidentally’ throw your friend.

Overall-9.5/10
(Not an Average)

Once again man, great review! Were did you see the lag? I also didn't think the story was that incredible as you made it sound...It was awsome but it wasn't incredible....
The lag happens a lot in Co-op trust me your guy will move from time to time at the speed of snail.

The reason I made the story sound so great is because I was thinking of it's time. I can't fairly review these sort of games for today so I thought of it's originality for it's time and also how the story kept the game moving was great. There are a lot of things you have to think about for story.

O and the Images will be smaller soon so that you don't have to scroll over.
Ya, thats a good way of thinking of it....I played like 20 minitutes of co-op with my dad and i did see some lag...Not big deal! Still a sweet game...
