Everyone at one point or another has heard of the "Zelda Timeline theories" and they revolve around eithor the strait line or parallel timelines. a third option that i thought up makes perfect sense and is strangely absent in all of my searching.
My thought begins with a variation of the popular split timeline theory with Minish cap and OOT being the first two. Adult timeline splits off into Wind Waker while Child timeline splits into Majoras Mask and beyond. With aLttP and TP having diferent begining stories but yet at the same time tied to OOT, there must be another timeline split.
Majoras Mask is the key here, anything revolving around time travel brings about a split in the time continuum. at the end of MM, two timelines branch out, the one where Terminia is saved and the one where the moon falls. in the moon falls scenario, link is gone from the timeline period, Ganon reaches the sacred relm and it takes a while for this seal to form without the hero. in the Terminia saved timeline, Link returns when Ganon is in his rampage and he is captured before his entry into the sacred relm by Link and the sages.
While this, like all theories is based on speculation, i believe this timeline is valid, untill the next Zelda game anyways... lol elaborations and criticizms are encouraged in this post.
i like the time line gametrailers.com did with the zelda retrospective
why cant nintendo just tell us what the timeline is! i dont even think all of the games connect to each other. its pretty obvious oot falls into mm, and ww is just a few hundred years later after oot, and for some reason all of hyrule was flooded, and theres no zelda (yet) with anything involving it being flooded. but you would think with this discussion poping up all the time some interviewer would actually just ask one of the main producers of zelda...
Maybe Link's awakening has something to do with Wind Waker or is like before it as if you notice he's flosting in the ocean.
But I might make a timeline sometime. Right now though Gametrailers is the best one. I've got there entire retrospect on me iPod.

i hate watching that video..so frustrating, twilight princess doesnt even fit into that timeline at all, i hope they make another zelda connecting after twilight princess like majoras mask did after ocarina of time

Well it was made before Twilight Princess came out so ya.

There most definitely is a timeline. I'm willing to bet that Miyamoto will never reveal it.
i think there is a timeline to, but i think only certain games connect to each other. you never know maybe twilight princess might be connected to some other new timeline theyre planning on wii. now iwant to see the next one and thats not for another what 2-3 years...shouldnt of beaten twilight princess in 4 days
Could somebody clarify this for me...Both WW and TP come sometime after OOT, but yet both only refer to ONE hero before. This leaves me extremely discombobulated.
Finally finished TP and some interesting facts come into play. there are four realms... Light, Sacred(Dark in aLttP), Twilight, and Minish. In TP, Gannon was not sealed by the sages in the sacred realm, refering to the young ending, while aLttP and WW have Gannon sealed in the Sacred realm after he gains possession of the Triforce. the question is could Gannon access the sacred realm at the end of the child ending (leading to aLttP)? and if so, what would be needed?
TP has Gannon excaping into the Twilight Realm not even mentioning a breach into the Sacred Realm.
could it also be a parallel universe where the Gannon of TP aquires the essence of power when the Gannon of OOT breaches the sacred realm?
frankly, i wish nintendo would release the timeline so my brain won't hurt anymore.
my head hurts from this thread now!
i've seen that gametrailers vid and i think that is the closest one that will be made
Gametrailers is the right one...They have paid people to think these things out!

Teh split timeline theory 0_o.
Final thoughts and i'm getting off of this subject.
TP takes place after the events of Links Awakening in the GameTrailors Timeline. You could say TP is the Imprisonment War that was mentioned in aLttP. Gannon aquiors the divine power of the gods at the execution where he excapes into the Twilight realm. The Knights of Hyrule are the resistance in TP with this Link being the decendant of the Link in aLttP. How this incorporates into the death scene at the end of TP leaves enough room for debate but somehow, with the death blow from the Master Sword, Gannon is banished into the sacred realm and finally claims the Triforce since the gate to the Light world is closed from the dark world and the other two pieces cannot transfer to Link or Zelda.
Or they built on other Zelda games because the first was such a grand slam, so it seems like a timeline and some games, but not all, are meant to follow each other. Take TP for example. That fits nowhere in the timeline, but they might make a sequel that coincedently makes it fit in a timeline. Or, (I hope this doesn't happen) TP was the final Zelda they are making. That is highly unlikley though, because it would have wraped everything up, unless they had a poor crew that made the wrap ups.
for all we know TP could branch off into some other completly new timeline they are adding to the zelda series for wii O_o

wrong, tp and links awenking are on seperate timelines. links awakening happens after majoras mask and before LoZ, tp happens after ocarina and before wind waker

Actually there's been a Wii Zelda in production for over a year now...
