so far i heard about wii video 9 to play movies on the wii and i tried it out but you need to buy a sd card with more than 4 gb just for a 1hr 40 min movie....is the wii capable of playing dvd's??? is there going to be a movie channel or anything like that where you have to buy it in order to play the dvds?
There's going to be a Wii that is DVD compatible. But you'll have to buy a whole new console to watch DVD's on the Wii. Can't be implanted by a firmware update according to Nintendo.

That is ONLY FOR JAPAN. Nintendo has no plans to this anywhere else.

Ya man who really doesn't have a DVD player. I could care less if the Wii played DVDs.
...Which was Nintendo's reasoning for not including a DVD/HD-DVD playback function. Most people already have a DVD player, and there are no movies (that I personally know of) that are released on HD-DVD yet. If there are, it hasn't penetrated the market enough that people *need* an HD-DVD player.
Therefore most people didn't care if it plays DVDs or not.
Seriously...there's no need for it...I don't want a Wii to watch movies, I want it for games and rad exclusive system features...
If you really want to get into crunching videos to play on the Wii then invest 30 bux or get a hack of Quicktime Pro and play with the export settings.
my mechanically-minded brain is telling me there is no way nintendo can't do this with just a software update. the only thing missing is: the codec and the gui.
try to tell me otherwise, i'm open to discussions.
I've heard that some of the mods that are out there will actually allow DVD playback but I have not seen/used them so I can't verify this.
Apparently modchips will allow it, otherwise you'll need to move to Japan and buy their DVD Wii that comes out later this year and learn Japanese.
Well i'm perfectly happy with my HDMI DVD player.
