Dow Jones has confirmed to not expect a PlayStation 3 price cut until 2009. The article had also stated that Sony will introduce the ability to download music and movies via PlayStation Store.

"Although analysts say price reductions would benefit PS3 sales, Sony isn't likely to make any price cuts for at least another two years, said Kimberly Otzman, a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment America. She noted a similar time frame for lowered prices for the PS2. 'We probably expect the same for PS3,' Otzman said, adding that while the console's price is higher than competitors', it comes completely packaged so consumers don't have to buy extra equipment or attachments."

my only issue with what the person stated is that you can't really compare the PS3 and the PS2, because the PS2 sold a hell of a lot more systems, so it wasn't necessary for Sony to cut the price like it will be for their PS3.
I agree with greenfrogthing. The PS3 =/= the PS2. The PS2 was something new, and it was very popular. There wasn't a need to have a huge price cut, since it was doing so well.

I think the PS3 needs a price cut A.S.A. NOW! People are majorly turned off by the $600+ price tag, so they are obviously going for a cheaper alternative like the *VERY FUN* Wii or *ALMOST AS FUN* Xbox 360.
I wonder if the PS3 is too complicated for a lot of people. It's one thing to have a $600 video game system, but it's being touted as a Media Hub.
*fixed*
ps3 is overhyped, in my opinion. I have to admit the graphics are great, but wii hasn't yet released the full details of their video card capabilities; citing that the games now are only just the beginning. ps3 definitely turns me off for its price, but we'll see. if it goes down, who knows?
I think at this moment it's very easy to say the PS3 has been over hyped. I'm guessing many people who purchased a Xbox 360 or even a Nintendo Wii might make the same claim about their respected systems.

It's easy to poke fun at Sony, because sometimes it seems they'd like us to believe that the Earth and perhaps the Universe revolve around them, but one can also look at the PS3 and see that from this point, it has no where to go but up.

*back to the original post though:

I would guess that by June, if PS3 sales are fairly flat, then Sony will either drop the price or sell special bundled systems for the same $599.99.
I think the reason for this is because Sony is already losing a ton of money on each console they sell since the selling price is less than the manufacturing costs. It would be suicide to drop the price even further, so they have to wait until the PS3's technology goes down in price.
question: can the price of the hardware, say....the Cell processor go down if it's only being put into the PS3 right now. I mean over time I'm sure they can find cheaper ways to manufacture it, but unlike the 360 and the Wii, the PS3 is using very distinct technology that doesn't support the idea of supply and demand, meaning, if you had many different products using the Cell processor, it would be much more practical to think you'd find cheaper ways to make it quicker, but not so much if your only putting it in 1 product.
like you said the PS3 is very complicated, so parents are lmore likely to buy the an easier to setup system. plus its way to much money, so again parents would buy whats better for them. another thing is that the PS3 has been reported to break down.

Did you know every 5 mins a PS3 breakdowns? (lol jk.)
DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD:

I want a PS3 but not that bad to pay that much, and if the price cut is like the PSP's $20 then it wouldnt really make a difference.

And it got a price drop in Japan I dont know in yen but like $80 in US.

I think when people breakdown the price of the Xbox 360, especially for those who have bought one already, add the new 120 gig hard drive, and add the adapter to make it have wireless internet access, then you find out that the PS3 isn't all that expensive. Plus I really think that Sony will work hard to make the PS3 much easier to manage.

I look at it like this. If I handed my mom the Wii-mote and said..."change the screen setting" she'd look at me dumbfounded, and not have a clue. I'm sure the average kid or tech-savvy adult will have no issue with the PS3 menus.
