Dunno if the source is really credible, but in addition to the 40 character number,
it says that Sakurai states Bowser Jr, Link from WW, and Ridley are joining.
It also says that Game and Watch, Ice Climbers, and (Young Link).
The french site says G&W and Ice Climbers are going because of a lack of interest in them from fans.
The french site also says that Falco is one of the characters that will get a new move set.
Don't really know whether to believe this site or not. Especially since this is from back in June, and we haven't heard any confirmation on this otherwise.

Roy is his own character, its just in Melee he was made into a clone. Roy could easily be decloned much like Falco, Ganondorf and Pichu.

They'll probably revamp Pichu if he stays. But again, I have no idea, I'm not Sakurai.
I don't think Pichu should stay even if they do give him a new moveset because Pichu is good enough. It reminds me of Young Link, which is Link but just younger. If they had Pichu, then they need to add Raichu and all other carnations and I definitely don't want to see that. I like Ice Climbers and I like Mr Game and Watch so they're fine with me. Dr. Mario, Young Link, and Pichu should go IMO.
Don't forget that according to that article there were be a couple (2) more 3rd party characters in the game with Snake being the only one we know of so far and NO, let's not beat the Sonic is one of them dead horse that I can feel is about to happen in regards to my statement.

50 is pushing it a bit. Then where would they go for the next Smash game? They have to leave themselves room.
If there is indeed forty characters in Brawl, they better god damn spend 24 hours a day till it's release date on them. Honestly, I hope there is like 20 or so because I do not want thrown together clones like Melee.
I would be surprised if they included Vaati in there. Either the complete form or his human form (the one where he kinda looks like Link).

People didn't complain about the clones in SSBM until they heard they might be getting removed in SSBB.
Well people who did whine are pretty silly. I would have preferred to have Doc as a clone than never be able to play as him at all.
