Most people would say that the PS3 is too expensive for consumers, but they don't actually say it's overpriced for what is in the machine.
1. Advanced Cell Processor
2. Blu Ray technology
3. Large Hard drive
4. Advanced Graphics Card (capable of true HD graphics and movie playback)
So what do you think the PS3 price should actually be? And btw your not getting off that easy, don't just vote but give a reason why.
*flaming will not be tolerated by anyone, so be able to back up your claim.
I paid the regular $599 for mine and I think it is worth it. Definitely over the next 5 years I think I will get my $599 worth out of it. I really like FF and I think the PS3 compliments the Wii very well ( I have no xbox 360 and don't plan to get one). The main reason for me is that I wanted HD movies, and the X360 w/ the HD player is $600 too, just like the PS3, but if you compare the specs and abilities, along w/ free online multiplayer on PS3 instead of fee based Xbox Live (Though, I will admit Xbox live is better than the Playstation Network). On a side note, I think the PS3 looks much better in a home theatre setup than the X360 and the HD player sitting next to it.
So, while maybe not worth $600 for the games I can play right now, the long term (5+ years) use of the PS3 will have it earn its value.
Also, as far as quality goes, I have an original PS2 (first shipment) and it is still working just as good as the first day I got it, so, this assumes my PS3 lasts as long and doesn't crap out on me.
I'm sorry, but for as "advanced" as these technologies are, they are not at all worth the price tag itself. Come a year or 2 from now, production costs, and consumer demand for this stuff will drop significantly and you will be kicking yourself in the ass for spending close to $1k on when by then there will be next no resale value on the console.
It's just like any "state of the art" piece of technology, they bring it out...All the asshol**s that can't wait rush for the stuff, blow a crazy amount of money for something and before you know it, they're (Sony) laughing it up while costs decline intensely...
As much as people like to think it's current price tag is worth it...Please stop kidding yourself, splash some cold water on your face and wake up already.
It comes down to everyones individual situation I think. If you just look at right now and you won't use it for Blu-Ray playback then yeah. As far as resell value, that only matters if you actually sell it, which I don't plan on ever doing. I mean, everyone is different when it comes to this. I paid $350 for my PS2 when it came out, now it is $130, but I feel like I got my money's worth out of it.
This comes down to an opinion, which can't exactly be right or wrong, though they can be argues. For example, and only example, someone who has a family and must support them and perhaps kids and other things, to them $600 is crazy to spend on something like this. But someone like me who doesn't have any of those responsibilities yet, just having regular costs like rent, car, insurance, etc. for 1 person, the $600 price tag is not that big a deal because I'm very interested in all games and I want to play my Resistance and Virtua Fighter 5. Anyways, with technology the prices are always going to drop, I know this, but to me it is ok and the $600 spent now is worth it because to be honest, I don't see any way the price will drop before 2007 is up (except maybe in the very end near Thanksgiving), and I just don't want to wait that long.
I don't mean to bash anyones opinion, and the true way to show your opinion is to buy or not by the system. The PS3 isn't for everybody now, not nearly like the Wii is, and don't get me wrong, I like my Twilight Princess and Trauma Center too, but man...you gotta see a Blu Ray movie...it is ridiculous. I guess it is my family too, for instance, we got our first DVD player for around $800 (though at the time I was still in high school so I didn't pay for it

), I think my dad still has it and it still works. So even though now you can get a DVD player for $40, the price was still worth it for all the use.
Here is a mathematical take on this
Value = (Enjoyment * Time) / Cost of Product
So, I think paying more money now is ok, because it increases my time of using the product. I think that the increase in time (maybe even as much as one year) is so great that it offsets the total cost and if I bought it in a year my overall value would be less. Again, different for everyone as 'enjoyment' and the real cost is different for everyone, along with the actual time of using the product, as only time spent using, not owning, the product can count into this.
Just my thoughts on this, feel free to respond, I just want to make clear I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, but rather a discussion related to the opinions of people on the true value of technology.
Agreed, this is a question that everyone can honestly disagree on. A movie enthusiast might look at the PS3 as a bargain, where as a purest gamer may think technology was pushed onto them and an unfair price.
I honestly think a price on keel with the Xbox 360 is fair.
It's overpriced for gamers but someone looking for an entertainment package or a cheap Blu-ray player would feel comfortable paying the current price.
Good call Kindrik, but you didn't vote???
i'd buy a PS3 for $599 USD just for LittleBigPlanet.
They're saying LittleBigPlanet will be a download demo for now, so hopefully when it actually comes out on blu ray disc, the PS3 will be a little cheaper so you won't have to play $599.99.
I'd pay about 299.99, If I have no games to play on it, whats the point of buying it. IMO.
i believe the machine itself is worth it, may even be a bit of a bargain, however any company can release a product worth much more than the competitors for a more expensive price, it takes brains to create a good machine on budget.
For example, if panasonic wanted to, they could've released their 90Gb flash drive (yes, ninety gigabyte) for $44,000 if they wanted to, but knew that it was too overpriced for the market. I believe sony should've held off on the blue ray until next gen, and become competitive with a more powerful machine than the 360 for the same price or less.
It's not that the Ps3 is too expensive its just that the games right now are not really killer.Motorstorm is ok and NBA streethomecourt is better on the 360.
I think when we start seeing more creative games like LittleBigPlanet and such, the reason for not buying a PS3 will no longer be lack of interesting games, but for now I understand and agree why that would keep people from shelling out hundreds on it.

I totally agree. Just because its new technology, doesn't mean you can force feed us it.
In a year or two, Blu-rays will drop significantly in cost, because, well, technology advances.
I really don't see a point in Blu-ray either, I'm not saying its useless, but for me, its just not needed. Why does someone have to watch a movie with the best possible image? Is it not enjoyable in DVD format?
I totally understand why they moved from VHS to DVD, but for me, as of today, swithing from DVD just isn't that important right now. The image is great, sound awsome, why would you need better?
Enough bout Blu-ray, you can tell I'm not a fan.. (and I'm not a fan of HD either, DVD is just fine as it is.) Anyway, buying the PS3 right now, is like buying a computer, with no graphics card, becuase it hasn't been released yet. What's the point of buying a console that doesn't have any good games to play?
I want a console so I can play games, not watch movies. Sony is just repeating what they did with the PSP, add all those features, but no games. I understand that games will eventually release, but, until then, why buy the PS3?
[/rant]
Cool thing is that Sony has announced a Blu Ray Player for anound $599.99. So If they can start selling the Blu Ray tech for that price, maybe we can actually see a drop in PS3 prices.

UMD anyone?
And don't forget the N64DD, satellaview for SNES, and Gameboy printer.
I had a gameboy printer, but since the other technologies were generally in Japan only...I don't count them.
Well the only reason why they stayed in Japan was because they failed there and it really wasn't worth bringing over to PAL or NTSC. I mean how many people outside of Japan knew about the PSX? (It's not what you think)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_(DVR)
I knew about the PSX...and for the time thought it was a cool idea. I also remember the 64DD and wanted one say badly, because if i remember right they were talking about Earthbound being put on that
