Gamespy has annouced a Partnership with Nintendo to bring online multiplayer technology to Wii developers.
IGN's GameSpy middleware division has announced that it will be delivering technology that will power friend lists, matchmaking, and ranking to publishers interested in online multiplayer games for the Nintendo Wii.
No more details were announced about the full range of the toolkit announced by GameSpy, or how it will be inter-operable with Nintendo's already-in-place online components such as the friend codes.
Gamespy has previously worked with Nintendo on the DS to bring Online to the system.

Edit:
Online multiplayer for the Wii will be a much more intensive project, with Nintendo promising additional services like in-game chatting and global competitions. Most online DS titles sport only a bare bones WiFi multiplayer mode.
I are really happy now!

SWEET!! This sounds like nintendo is on the right trake for online games!!
and could be a good start why online games keep getting delayed. maybe they were looking for someone to provide this assistance to the system. could also lead to what i anticipated, being able to see who's online with your friend codes, but seeing nicknames asigned to the codes instead of the whole list of numbers
good find rooster

Friends List? Rankings? Win.
Perhaps we'll start to see more online games getting release dates now! Maybe MP3 will have online multiplayer now!

Do you guys think there will be headsets for online talking dureing gameplay? Kinda like the Xbox live head set....
I guess...see edit mr. luben
YES!!! Sweetness! I am so glad that nintendo is trying to pull there online together! Lets just hope they see it through.....
I think this was announced at E3? I saw a 'reminder' of this at wiifanboy.com though
anyways, I'm not too sure about this... Gamespy partnered with PS2 online, and how can i put this... it sucked. Star wars: battlefront 2 highscores didn't even work, as with some other games
hopefully they will be able to fix those type of problems this generation though, because Nintendo is really known for being on top of that type of stuff.
Well Nintendo partnered with Gamespy for the DS' online and it didn't suck.
I think that there were flaws with the DSs online, but i think nintendo learned from that and they will come out with a great online service.....I hope they pull through.....
Yeah, I remember when Metroid prime hunters was first released, the highscores were a little screwy, but they got them quickly fixed
but not having friend codes would be AMAZING
I saw this a few hours ago but havn't got the time to write a Portal post. Hopefully Mana will be able to whip something up.
If I may put it in the genius words of Wayne and Garth:
EXCELLENT! *air guitar*

Just got back from work and saw this. My brain is a bit fried but I'm sure I can whip something up.
Firstly I'm glad that RoosterJCrowley is "I are really happy now!" that made me smile.
Secondly, I've never used GameSpy before, but since they've been around about as long as any other service (thinks back and believe they saw GameSpy cross the Red Sea with Moses) at least they'll know what their doing.
Online chatting, Global competitions?......FTW!
Who knows what Wii online will bring us, but lets hope its good!
I felt like doing a little dance. As I always thought Wii Online was gonna be ok and fun. But this. THIS! THIS! This sounds awesome! God I can't wait!
this definitely makes me happy to hear.
+1 for Gamespy and Nintendo!
I'm pretty sure every console using Gamespy. As does the DS. So I'm not really taking this in as particularly good or bad news, but I hope it is on the good side. But at least with the DS, the extent to which it's used seems to be just connecting user-to-user and statistics.
