Don't know if any of you guys have heard, but recently Marvel Comics killed off Captain America. They were trying to make a political statement, but in doing so angered many of his patriotic followers.
This thread is to pay homage to the late, great, American hero with an indestructible shield.
Rest easy, Captain America. We'll miss you.

Yeah, I heard about this a couple of days ago. It's so sad. I'm still pissed off about way back when they killed Superman and I actually got my hands on the limited edition versions as well as the normal versions and they would have been worth sooooooooo much but NO, they had to bring him back. I haven't read a comic since then...
RIP Captain America
yea...its kinda sad..but the people of america need to be aware of the corrupt greedy people in control of this country...and i guess they believed killing off captain america might aid in spreading the word. But its a comic...u never know...he may come back one day...Capt America fakes death to stop greedy corporate america?
Nuuuu, my Captain America! T_T This...has made me sad now. Forget about political statements, give him back D:
there are more important things in life than characters in comic books....and even so this character is popular enough to be revived. Dont stress over this loss...stress over your future living in the USA or living being in a country negatively affected by USA and its greedy politians and corporate leaders.

Not exactly whats going on in the comic... Events leading to his death was more about how America's values having changed from Captain America's post-WWII ideals, and in his steadfast defense of his beliefs, he neglected to see what effect his stance was having on everyday people.
What's happening in the Marvel Universe recently is an interesting parallel to our modern America, with the threat of terror and war and political corruption. When an amateur hero team's neglegence in going after some powered villains, ends with one of them blowing up a good portion of a suburban town, in particular an elementary school, regular people start to feel angry and unsafe. It leads to a Registration Act of all superpowered people, which will make the gov't aware of who they are, and give them the choice of continuing being a hero, except under the lead of the gov't.
There's a lot more to it, but there are parallels to the Patriot Act which makes it seem a little excessive, and on the othere side, it does seem like the natural progression of the superhero's place in society, and for the protection thereof. The later is especially true when you realize all the collateral damage that is done in a superpowered battle, which is what Cap realizes in the end.
The way he goes out is not a fake out on his part in any means, its a legitimate death in full view. It doesn't mean he won't be back - I have my theories in that realm. But on face value, everything points to him being dead.
So, what I'm saying, wii4mii, is that it's not so simple as that. In the comic, there's so much more to what leads to this event. And in real life, there's so much more that leads to a corruption of politics and our current state as a nation. Yes, there are plently of corrupt and lying politicians, but the world itself is so much more complicated. It's not like it was in the 40s, where things were more straight forward and idyllic. And that's what we have come to realize in our world, and what Cap and the rest of the Marvel Universe has come to realize.
We live in a world where Captain America can die.
lol i have no idea about the story of his death. I just heard from posts and responded with my own disgust of how this country conducts it's "business". But thx for the info~!=D And as to say corruption ok bc the work is more complicated is bogus. I know of several disguesting political tools some of these bastards use and abuse and have literally confused the general public to aid in their own personal goals. And its rampant in our society. I dont mind keepin secrets but allowing policies to be decided by the extremely wealthy and be completely influenced and manipulated by this minority in our society is flawed and devistating to the future of our society. And bc this minority controls so much of our major industries politicians turn the other cheek. I can't believe captain america's death has begin political talks...im sorry for starting it. lol We should have a more political orientated forum. That would be nice. Discussing policies and current issues societies all around the world face every day would be very interesting expecially with some reasonably knowledgable people.
im glad, captain americas comics sucked ass. even nick fury was better than him
They'll bring him back.
Just you wait.
is this the 1st death of a comic icon since Superman? i can't think of any others, but i haven't followed comics in awhile
@wii4mii
Yeah I was mainly reacting to you lumping Captain America's death in with the ideas of corruption in our country and that his being killed was some kind of statement about that... because there's no real correlation. At least not that directly a link.
You mention you find it interesting that Cap's death had begun political talks.
You may be suprised but comics are, and always have been one of the first media to mirror, react to, and critique things happening in society. And they often do it better than a lot of other forms, because they're contiuous stories that grow right along side what's going on. Right now, there's a mini-series Squadron Supreme: Hyperion v. Nighthawk that uses these characters clashing methods to talk about things happening in Darfur...something that is usually eclipsed in our policy and the news by Iraq and Iran...
These days, Cap and Punisher are a couple series that focus primarily on war and seek to provoke political conversation, the entirety of the Civil War is meant for that purpose, as it reflects things happening in our society and how our country runs.
My first post was also reacting to you using pretty blanket statements of greedy corporations and politicians... I thought you were just making those ol' "screw corporate America" arguements without any basis for the beliefs. I didn't intend to completely excuse corporations. Those that get their fingers into politics and influence war and social policies I find appauling.
You said:

I just found this statement to be a very black and white way of looking at things.
And I reacted with this:
And in real life, there's so much more that leads to a corruption of politics and our current state as a nation.
But I guess what I meant to say was just that there is more to it than "all politicians are corrupt and all corporations are greedy." I felt like with your earlier posts, that's how you saw all of them to be. But with your subsequent post, I see you zeroing in on a more select group of people.
But anyway, we don't need to get into semantics, what this thread should be about is about is Captain America's death, peoples reactions, and what it might mean to the Marvel Universe and in our own world, particularly at this point in time. If politics are included, it should come out of what Cap meant.
is this the 1st death of a comic icon since Superman? i can't think of any others, but i haven't followed comics in awhile
Not really anything of as much of an impact as Sups or Cap, nor that the hero wasn't later revived from. There was the whole Spider-Man Clone Wars debacle, which felt like a death, but that was rectified.
The last big comic book occurrence that I can remember making the news, besides Civil War, was when Mary Jane had a miscarriage. I thought it was pretty interesting that that was written in the series and that there was so much public real world sympathy... everyone is always pullin for Spidey I guess.
Never liked Captain America. Wasn't a very interesting hero.
But still, kinda sad to him gone I guess.
I never cared for America Captain America, But I wish he made a movie before he got "gung ho?"
There can still be a movie... but I dunno.
What was the main villian of his show?
Red Skull. he was a Nazi leader in WWII. otherwise i think he just fought terrorists and crap. he did make a movie back in the day. it was actually pretty good, especially compared to most comic hero movies, even more so back then
and i think LMX is mad because there's no Cpt. Aussie
IS there a Cpt. Aussie?
This is where someone changes Cpt. America's sheild to the Aussie flag.
Why would we want a Captain Australia? He'd probably be as lame as Captain America.
No thank you.
Yeah i saw that.. should be interesting.
