There have been rumors surfacing that Sony is trying to discontinue the 20GB model. In Europe, low demand for the 20GB version caused Sony to not offer the cheaper SKU: only 60GB models are available in that territory. America may soon meet the same fate, as Best Buy has stopped ordering 20GB versions of Sony's latest console.

Phasing out the 20GB version is a win for both the retailer and Sony: the retailer earns more money, and Sony loses less on each system sold (they lose an additional $65 for each 20GB sold). Also, consumers seem to prefer the higher-end system. With Best Buy no longer ordering the "value" edition of the system, it won't be long before other major retailers follow suit. Will not offering a $499 version of the console make it less accessible to the masses? Or, does it further solidify Sony's "Mercedes" image?

Do you think Sony is just going to eventually drop the 20gb completely?

If they do, I think it will sell even less, because no one in Canada can afford no $699.99 PS3. >Sad
When I walk through the local stores, I normally see the PS3's with the larger hard drives anyhow. People have argued in the past that the smaller hard drive really can't do much for a system that can/will have downloadable HD content. This might not be a bad idea. In for a penny, in for a pound. If your gonna spend so much for the PS3, you might as well get the bigger hard drive.
Ditto, GFT. I see the more expensive one behind my Wal-mart's glass windows.

Not trying to sound like a fanboy, but even if they do drop the 20GB model, won't they still be losing a sizable amount of money with each created PS3?
That's kinda evil if they just want to get more profit so they hide or don't order the smaller ones but from the two previous posts, it looks like this is not the case. If I do ever decide to buy the PS3, I'll get the 80 gig one for sure.

Off Topic: XBox360's here only have the larger hard drive, the smaller ones are not sold anymore.
I don't think they're hiding 20gig ones, at least not at my stores. I think they're requesting the more expensive ones, because those were the ones that sold the best during pre-order times.
Yeah, with me it was easy to get the 60G over the 20G because if I'm gonna drop $500 w/ no wifi, no slots of memory cards, and only 20G (which isn't much, Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion requires 4.5 Gigs of HDD space to install), seems pointless. The extra $100 to me was worth it for the added features. THis is a high-end electronics product, at this price point if it doens't have things like wifi, I think people will just wait and save up for the more expensive one, or not buy one at all.
