heres mine:
Ok, when i first loaded up the game, i was stoked. I was hoping for the greatest, but via igns review, i was expecting the worst.
So as the game loaded up, they first did a tutorial. Upon using the tutorial, i thought to myself, wow, these graphics are HORRIBLE. have you seen the deer and their movements? I really wish they would have just left them out. They look like south park characters. There head will be up, then if they move their head down to eat, it does it in two movements. One movement will be halfway down to the ground, and the final movement will be their head in the grass. I just cant get past that, its almost funny in how bad they are. But thats ok, the system has only been out for a few months, i'll look past it... for now. The sound..... well, its golf, so you get what you get.
As for the swing mechanism, it seems pretty flaunted. The backswing the player on screen takes is NOT in accordance w/ how you move the wiimote. Major negative points on that one. Secondly, I cannot use my own golf swing, cuz its way out of whack on screen and cant hit the ball where i want it to go for the life of me. So i have to settle for using a short side-to-side motion, much like slicing your wrist back and forth.
Then the tutorial went to chipping. Wow. This game could not be worse for a short game. The lack of a power meter KILLS it, and the practice swings are absolutely worthless. So chipping is virtually impossible. Sometimes the ball shanks off to the right, sometimes it barely moves, sometimes it goes 2.389 miles. Who the f knows.
Now onto putting. Again, EA failed horribly. You cannot aim putts at all. You can read see the "ideal putt" but theres NO GRID LINES on the ideal putt. So all you can really do is GUESS about where to aim and hope your right. And dont even think about trying to judge distances. Your putter is pretty much set for a certain distance for each putt. A full putt might not make it to the hole, or it might go 39 feet past the cup. You just dont know. As i was playing last night, i got REALLY irritated and couldnt believe this. If i made my putt, i took the lead with 1 hole left. So EA decided to go into this "tiger mode" where the remote started vibrating and you could hear a heartbeat. but guess what happened? You guessed it. The wiimote thought the vibration was ME trying to putt, so it putted the ball The ball was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay short of the hole, not even close. It mistook its own vibration for me putting. Incredible. And yes, i ended up losing the match.
When i created my player, it could not have been worse. The button layout for choosing/selecting is not good. Im constantly hitting the button that SHOULD be used for something, and its something else, which tries to take me back to the main screen. Therefore i have to go back to the screen i was at in create a player mode, which is SERIOUSLY slow. When you are on screen 10 of 11 in creating your player, and you get taken back to save the player, which you didnt want to do, and to get back to screen 10, it has to go through all 9 previous screens, and its not a fast task. Very very cumbersome. This also needs a complete overhaul.
A little bit more:
AIMING. Its toooooooo long to click the A button to check for the aim. It lifts up..... and waits.... and then slooooowly moves in toward your target. it takes waaaay too long to set up the shot. Very annoying to do that for every shot.
Also, it doesnt show distance to the pin from the main screen. WTF. You have to hit A, then it pops up w/ your player name, your shot, your score, etc. Stupid. Distance should be ON THE SCREEN at all times just like the club distance is.
Im sure theres bits and pieces im missing and havent noticed yet. I have not tried golfing w/ the nunhuck, but whats the point? If i used the nunchuck to golf, i may as well have just kept my PS2.
overall, heres my grading scale:
Graphics: 5/10
The sky looks great, the courses look good, and the people look good. But when it all comes together, it just doesnt do it. The grass waving makes the system choppy to what seems about a 2fps frame rate. Hopefully the graphics can be cured by next years version. Theres also Lots and lots of jaggies. I also understand that this is the first golf game for the wii from EA, so i'll let it slide.
Sound: 8/10
Its golf, theres not much to the sounds
Controls: 3/10
The swing mechanism needs a complete overhaul. It should be more like wii sports golf, where the players club is the actual wiimote, instead of a start/finish type thing. And dont get me started on the create-a-player. the button layout for that is horrendous and constantly found myself going back and forth trying to get it done. I know how to do it and i still screw it up.
Gameplay: 8/10
The actual gameplay isnt bad so far. The game where you have an alternate shot w/ your opponent is lots of fun actually. Everything else seems pretty decent. It would be nice to have a seperate "speed play" button, to where you can skip shots and cut scenes, cuz they can get very boring, and just holding down the A button only speeds up the ball flight.
Overall: 5/10
Unfortunately, EA dropped the bomb. However its the first game for the system, and if they are a decent company, which we know they arent, they would fix all these problems for the 08 version. The bad thing is, this is the best golf game out for the wii. If you want to drop 50 bucks on a subpar game, go for it. but i would wait it out if it were me. Im hoping 08 is great.
