Nintendo, lovers of innovation and customer appreciation (sinister smile), have come out and confirmed that the Wii will not have an external hard drive for those who wanted such a convenience. Check it out:

Nintendo has dismissed reports that it's going to release an external hard disk drive for the Wii so that people can transfer some of their stuff off the machine's internal flash drive, but it has confirmed that the DS is about to get a voice communication headset.

Japanese magazine Gamelabo claimed that Nintendo Japan executives had met recently to discuss the hard disk drive, but Nintendo UK told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz that that's "pure rumour and speculation".

External storage is handy for Wii owners who like to buy games via Virtual Console, as the 512MB internal drive can quickly fill up. At the moment, users can invest in an SD flash-card to help store some of their software and save-game files away from the main system.

Is it really so hard to maybe put out a little something for your loyal customers? Seriously, what the hell? It's not like the company would sell it for free.

buzzkill-so says drew
There are two USB 2.0 plugs in the back of the Wii. I think eventually we'll be able to put our own External Hard drives into them.
wishful thinking on your part
Yeah, I posted this on the Hard Drive thread and now I take the flak for killing the dream. I'm glad you posted it now and let them throw stones at you.

I think eventually someone will come up with a way to use your own hd and that day will be great!
maybe wii 2.0 or 3.0 or....

although i love nintendo, sometimes they miss the mark (friend codes anyone-arggh)
Unless Nintendo is bluffing on this. It's only a matter of time before the system is hacked and people start attaching externals...Too bad there isn't a firewire port...constant bit stream FTW!
lets make our own harddrives and show nintendo whose boss...
^lol.

Ya I'll make my own Hard Drive! They'll be soooo jealous that they'll buy it from me and I'll make tons of money! BUAHAHAHAHA!

^Wishful thinking. Toungue
IM almost positive someone will create a way to work around this.

I don't think it's wishful thinking at all. Someday Nintendo will be introducing different channels that might take up a lot of room for downloads IE: a demo channel. I doubt if most people will be happy to only have a handful of games on their 2gig SD card....

The USB 2.0 ports are there for a reason, not just for decoration.

I hope theyre there for headsets
Wow, this sucks......
eh. I personally don't care. Nintendo will release an external hard drive eventually, no matter what Nintendo of Europe says. Seriously. I only believe stuff that comes from Nintendo of Japan (Head honchos. No offense to Europeans...)

but it looks like we'll have to wait.
Meh, I beleive what they all say. There all part of Nintendo after all... >.<

But I agree they probably will make one eventually.
They better! *shakes fist*

They will, and if they don't, a third party will.
Silly Nintendo.
I don't really care, an $100 Wii external Harddrive, out of the question for me.

I'm sorry, but thats just freakin' funny, just that paragraph XD.
? I don't see the funneh...

Well, I'd like a hard drive, also for bigger storage, music, videos (replays perhaps?) saved games, vc games.

Sure SD cards work, but a hard drive has a much bigger capacity.
An external harddrive > SD cards.

Especially if they allow us to record things in our games. Like say, and SSBB match.
lox'd
