technicly yea, people allways call the USA amercia.

yea my friend is canadian he says hes canadian and not american

i think hes just been smoking too much syrup or eating too many moose or something
both
Of course not... they are Diet Americans Toungue
According to every Brit I've had the bad luck to meet on Live (really, you guys seem to have the worst online attitude I've come across), yes, we are American.

Although, every Canadian I know (including myself), balks at the suggestion that we are 'American'. Really, it'd be like me calling a Scot British, just because they're on the same island.

Bah, I can't explain why, but it really grates on me to be called American.
They way I tried to explain it to my friend was that he was only calling himself by the country he lived in, and not also the continent. Like people in Kenya, Egypt and Etheopia are all African, because thats the continent they live in. As with Mexicans, ?United Statesians?, and Canadians are all Americans (or North Americans, same thing pretty much)
That's foolish. As I pointed out before with the Scottish/British thing, it doesn't matter what continent you're part of, the people get their names from the country. Russia is a part of the Asian continent, but we don't call them Asians. Ethopia is home to Ethopians, not Africans. Mexico is a part of the Americas, but they aren't called Americans, they're called Mexicans.

The people that live in the United States have a claim on the term 'American', and it has come to refer to people from the USA in particular, not people from the America's in general.

Just as Germans would get riled if you refered to them as European, so Canadians get riled when we're referred to as American.
Well why do most people call someone from africa African, instead of their original country they are from? And alot of people call Chinese 'Asians'
WE ARE NOT AMERICAINS! >:E

Calling us Americain is basically saying: "Pffft, Your not a country your just a part of the U.S.A"

We are not Americains. WE ARE CANADIANS AND DAMN PROUD OF IT!

During WW2 we didn't fight as Americains we were Canadians! During war we are not Americains! We are Canadian!

I will not be classified as an Americain.

I don't know, because they're ignorant?

Also, there is the whole personal aspect to it. Like, if it was just me and a friends, we might refer to people that live in Polland, say, as Europeans. But if there was a Pole in that group, we would call him by his nationality. So, when you refer to me, it should be as a Canadian, but if you're talking in general about people that live in North America, you should say "North Americans".

As I've said before, the term 'American' has a very specific meaning, that whoever you're refering to is from the USA.

Exactly ihavewiiproblems is right.

I don't wish to be called Americains, your basically stripping my individuallity of being a Canadian and generalising my nationality!
lol. Us Canadians stick together when we feel threatened. Toungue

As much as I would prefer NOT to be called an American, I could see it making some sense, from the eyes of someone on another continent. For example, when we don't really know whether a person is Japanese, Chinese, Thai, etc, we tend to just call them Asians to avoid any misconceptions. Same thing when a person is Ethiopian, South African, Congan(?), etc we just call them Africans. If we don't know if they're Saudi Arabian, Egyptian, Iraqi, etc we call them East Indian, etc, etc.

I can see how an outsider might not be able to tell the difference between a Canadian and an American, so they just generalize us into Americans. North American would be more fitting however, because technically an American should indicate that they are from the United States.

But if you know I'm from Canada and you call me American, you're gonna get an earful...
