Hopefully this topic won't offend people as much
anyways, I only brought this up because last week someone said that they were fruits... but I really think that they are vegetables.
they have seeds, they are fruits.
they have seeds, they are fruits.
I have heard this too, but what about cucumbers?
Technically they're fruits. But regardless of what they say, a tomato will always be a vegetable in my book.
Fruits... Vegetables.. they're all yummy in my book! Why discrimin-eat?
i went the lazy route and looked it up...if you wanna be technical, it's both a fruit and a vegetable
"The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. [...] As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The tomato, though technically a fruit, is often used as a vegetable, and a bean pod is also technically a fruit. [...] So a tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, but can be used as a vegetable in cooking."

A vegetable AND a fruit. That pardox must've opened a black hole or something somewhere.
there was a court case over this tho back in the early 1900s, because the tariff on fruits were 10 cents a pound and vegetables had no tariff. or something like that I can't remember
hmm. How'd the court rule it? I say they should have place tomatos under fruits.

veggies FTW
I say tomatoes are fruit because of the seeds but to avoid looking stupid i just call them vegetables like most people.
I always thought of it as more of a vegetable but I see the argument with the seeds. Now, what about potatoes? When someone asks me about my diet I saw that I eat only meat, cheese, and potatoes. I hate all fruits and vegetables, except for the potato and they say potatoes aren't vegetables...or are they? Dun, dun, duunnn.
I'm pretty sure potatoes are vegetables in the conventional sense.
Tomatoes, though? fruit, most def. just not necessarily a sweet one
End all, be all:
A fruit is actually the sweet, ripened ovary or ovaries of a seed-bearing plant. A vegetable, in contrast, is an herbaceous plant cultivated for an edible part (seeds, roots, stems, leaves, bulbs, tubers, or nonsweet fruits). So, to be really nitpicky, a fruit could be a vegetable, but a vegetable could not be a fruit.
The Nutriquest team offers a similar answer, adding that most fruits are sweet because they contain a simple sugar called fructose, while most vegetables are less sweet because they have much less fructose. The sweetness of fruit encourages animals to eat it and thereby spread the seeds. The site also presents an interesting list of fruits that are often thought to be vegetables:
tomatoes
cucumbers
squashes and zucchini
avocados
green, red, and yellow peppers
peapods
pumpkins

I HAVE SPOKEN!!! Pretty interesting stuff though. I always considered gourds to be gourds, and more closely related to vegetables than fruit. I was wrong.
And to spell it out for you, a potato is a vegetable.
I still think all those things your listed are vegetables... i've never heard a pumpkin called a fruit though
It's a gourd, and I guess gourds are fruit.
I still think a cucumber is a veggie also...
I mean I put cucumbers and tomatoes in my salad, and you dont see me calling it a fruit salad now do yah??!!
sorry...
For potatoes its neither!!! Its a Spud!!!!!!!
